On October 17, 2014 I made the biggest mistake of my life. I had unprotected sex (2x) with my ex who is HSV2 + I knew he had it he told me 5 yrs ago( we broke up before he contracted it from some girl)
2 weeks after the exposure I started feeling throbbing pain in my vagina and immediately thought I had contracted herpes. On Nov 2 I went to Planned Parenthood I was told 2 weeks was too early to test and 3 months was best. They did a full STI blood test HSV1/2 included I tested positive for HSV 1 which I knew since I had since high school didn’t contract that sexually I don’t know how I got it. I don’t know the values for the HSV test I had to call in and got an automated system.
My primary sent me to the gynecologist on Nov 18 they did a NuSwab Vaginitis Plus came back abnormal for Atopobium vaginae and was given Clindamycin which provided some relief but the throbbing came back. The gynecologist told me to come back in December for the herpes blood test.

      Dec 2, 2014 6 weeks 4 days
      Labcorp
      HSV Type 2-Specific Ab, IgG
HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec <0.91 Negative

they as did a routine pap smear and pelvic exam that same day it came back abnormal

So on 12/23/14 I went in for a colposcopy results were +HPV +LGSIL with acute and chronic cervicitis
I was told we had to watch and wait there was not treatment I was still experiencing the throbbing.
The throbbing would come and go so I was still worried about herpes I kept googling symptoms

I went back for another test on 1/23/15 14 weeks
      LabCorp
      HSV Type 2-Specific Ab, IgG
HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec <0.91 Negative

      HSV Type 1-Specific Ab, IgG
      HSV 1 IgG,Type Spec 59.20 High

The gynecologist said you’re done testing you’re negative. I continued have discomfort done there and I kept thinking it has to be herpes what else could it be? Yes the throbbing has significantly went down but it was still there I was told HPV and cervicitis has no symptoms

4/17/2015 tested Negative for HIV (googling again)

I went back June 9,2015 but that gynecologist did a
HSV, IgM 1/2 Combo <0.91 Negative (I consider this a wash) *I wasn’t aware of this until I asked for copies of my records on 6/25/15
Came back positive for gardnerella vaginalis given flagyl 500mg

      June 23, 2015
I go back for my 6 month follow up for the LGSIL it came back Negative for intraepithelial lesion and malignancy. My HPV is dormant

      July 2, 2015
I went in because I was experiencing itching/soreness and redness I was told I had a yeast infection and stop testing you don’t have herpes!! If you did there would be lesions! I read lesions could be inside not always on the outside and some people have no symptoms

      July 7, 2015 8 months post exposure
I went again I wanted to be sure! she did a blood test and a swab did a quick look said the vagina looks healthy
      LabCorp
      HSV Type 2-Specific Ab, IgG
HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec <0.91 Negative

      HSV Type 1-Specific ABb, IgG
      HSV 1 IgG,Type Spec 53.30 High
Swab came negative for everything…. yeast infection etc

I want closure but these “symptoms” are still here with some new ones such as tingling in the butt cheeks(comes and goes) ! I’m no longer welcomed at the facility I was told I came almost every month this year and there’s nothing wrong with me it’s all in my head. They also gave me a list of mental health specialists . My primary is no help either he said if there’s no lesion there’s no test and the blood tests are flawed. I have an appointment with a new gynecologist on 8/2 (I want to find out if it’s not herpes then why do I have this throbbing pain why all these infections) Prior to this herpes scare I never had any issues down there! I even got a Brazilian wax so I can see if anything appears. l check down there every day using a mirror I can’t eat or sleep I’ve lost weight Instead of using my free time wisely I’m check forums to find some help.
Terri please tell if I’m done with herpes testing!! And what does the high number for HSV 1 mean?

You are done with herpes testing. Period. Testing more will keep your worries and anxiety going and you need to stop, as your doctor told you. They were correct to decline to test your further. Research really supports this. You waited long enough to be tested from your sex with your ex. I don’t know why you are having throbbing, but it isn’t HSV 2. I would have asked you to get a western blot after your four month test was negative if it would have helped you to believe our negative status. Your HSV 1 value simply means that you have a good solid immune response to HSV 1.

Thank you Terri for responding. I WILL NOT test any further I trust you.
I did accept the negative result after the 1/23/15 test and felt good all of February/March until the throbbing came back. Then I was searching online again ( I know it’s bad) reading about false-negatives/false-positives tests missing an infection different symptoms and experiences. I also kept wondering why I got HPV but not HSV which are both STIs. My ex was the only one I’ve ever been with and vice versa (until we broke up anyways clearly he was with other girls…… I didn’t have sex with anyone until that encounter) so I know it had to come from him. I’ve learned my lesson completely I don’t ever want to put myself in that situation ever again.

You know that no test is 100% perfect and nothing is life is completely certain. But you’ve done the correct stuff and that’s about all you can do. You’ve been conscientious and careful and with great concern for yourself and future partners.

If your ex had been with other partners then yes, HPV likely came from him, but HPV is so very easy to transmit and most all sexually active adults have had one strain or another at some point in their lives, but HSV 2 is not that easy to transmit and only affects 16% of adults between 14 and 49 have it, so they are very different creatures.

So the negative tests may not be completely certain?! I may have herpes and not know it?
I was reading through some of the other questions in the forums and this alerted my attention

      From Jessie:
Hi again, I know I have already asked you this, but for clarification, how often have you seen someone test negative for hsv 2 on herpeselect a year from possible exposure and then test positive on western blot for hsv 2? Thanks

And you answer: 9 times in 33 years

      I’m really confused now.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this I’m just scared! I’m in a relationship now and I want to be for sure I don’t have HSV2
I didn’t mention that I also had PCR test done one on 6/9 and 7/7 would that show anything? It was negative for both HSV1/HSV2

Yes, nine times in 33 years I have had a patient be swab test positive and antibody negative. Considering that I see at least one herpes patient, usually more, on a day when I work, that is a very very small number. If you are looking for a perfect test for herpes, there simply is none, just as there is no perfect test for anything. You are not alone in wanting the absolute proof that you are not infected with HSV 2. We can’t give you that as a profession but I think you should nonetheless be very reassured about your herpes status.

This is our final post on this subscription and I really have nothing to add on this topic for you.

      Best
