I am a 36 y/o male and have been engaging in both protected and unprotected oral sex with other males (mainly performing, but sometimes reciprocal). I received a positive diagnosis for HSV 2 three weeks ago and since then, I’ve been on a journey to gain as much understanding of this condition as possible. One area where I’m the most confused is the test “scores”. For HSV 1 the value is <0.90 and for HSV 2 the value is >23.00.
. I have not had any symptoms in the traditional sense as I have come to understand them (e.g. blisters). Although today I have noticed a sore throat and for the last few months, I have had itching on my inner thighs. Inspection doesn’t show any blisters, just slight swelling around hair follicles and no rash, scabs or discoloration.
She said that it wasn’t necessary as long as I’m not having an outbreak.
As an FYI, I get tested for STDs every year but this was the first time I’d been tested for herpes, so I have no idea how long I’ve been infected. Herpes tests were not standard in the tests done by my previous provider.
There is nothing particularly unusual about having an index value that high when a person has a long-standing HSV 2 infection. The symptoms that you describe do not sound like a herpes outbreak but you could go to see your provider and have a swab test done. If you want to reduce the chance of infecting sexual partners, daily antiviral therapy would be very useful.
