Hello Terri,
I went to do a routine STI check which included herpes testing. The herpes test was a rapid in office test that did not include any index values, only HSV1 and HSV2 positive/negative status. Mine was positive in both cases.
When I went to see the doctor, he said that indeed this test did not provide any index values, and he did not know the name/brand of the test that was utilized.
Also he said, that he cannot diagnose me with anything as the antibody tests are not reliable and I am asymptomatic for HSV2 (and have always been). I do have HSV1 as I have had cold sores since I was a child.
Should I trust my positive HSV2 test result, given the fact I have HSV1 and have been asymptomatic all my life? Also I had a recent outbreak of a cold sore on my lips (3 months ago).
I live outside of US, so my question is what is the procedure for doing a WB when not living in the US?
Thank you for your time.
This is unfortunate. I am not a fan of in office tests for herpes antibody and we know there are lots of false positives on all the IgG tests for HSV 2.
Doing the blot depends on where you are and who would draw your blood. Where are you?
Terri
