Hi Terri, I have asked this question before several weeks ago. 3 months ago I engaged in a sexual encounter with a man who masturbated himself before anally fingering me. I believed he had genital herpes due to a reddish like sore he had in his public area. And since this incident I have had itching &a pain in my anal area. I have seen three doctors so far. The first docotr said I had a fissure. Then the second doctor I went to said that he thought I had a yeast infection and gave some cream to use with no improvement, I then went to another doctor who said it looked like a I had a skin irritation and gave me another ointment that didn’t help. I also had a herpes igg blood test approximately 10 weeks since the incident and I tested positive for herpes type 1 but negative for type 2. And a few days ago I went to a dermatologist, he said that he didn’t see any sign of irritation or sores on the outer part of my anus. However when discussing the possibility of herpes he said some things that bothered me. He said even though I tested neg for hsv2 it didn’t matter. He said herpes type 1 &2 are the same thing and since I was positive for type 1 that I could have herpes inside of my rectal area, and said I should go to a gastroenterologist to see if I have sores inside of anus and now I’m really worried that I have herpes but I’m confused because I thought hsv type 1 & 2 were different types of the virus and that herpes type 1 rarely affects the anus & genitals. And I’ve already known I’ve had hsv1 cause I’ve had cold sores before, so how could it spread orally to my anus? I thought that once you have a type of herpes in an area of the body that it stays there cause the body builds an immunity? And if I do have herpes, wouldn’t the sores appear outside of by anus instead of inside? Can that happen? Please clarify!

Your HSV 1 antibody is coming from your cold sore history. Once you have HSV 1 (the cause of recurrent cold sores the vast majority of the time) in one location on your body, you are extremely unlikely to get it at a new location. so I think you can safely rule out HSV 1 as the cause of your anal pain.
You may wish to visit with a proctologist, they specialize in anuses and rectums and could likely help you sort this out. I’m wondering if you just got scratched inside?
I honestly don’t think herpes is the cause of what’s going on here for you.

Ok Thank you Terri. That doctor just really made mere nervous and confused me. Is what he said about sores appearing on the inside of the anus true? Cause that bothered me and is making me wonder, and I just feel worried and don’t know what could be causing this. I will see proctologist as well soon, but also the fact that I did test negative for hsv-2 10 weeks after this incident. Is that a good sign? Because if I had been infected by him wouldn’t the virus had shown up as hsv2 if I was infected?

The fact that you test negative after 10 weeks is excellent news indeed!
I regret to tell you that the dermatologist is wrong on several issues here, including telling you that HSV 1 and 2 are the same thing – they definitely are not. But then I think you know there is poor information there.
If you were infected by him, with 97% certainty, the HSV 2 antibody test will be positive within 12-16 weeks.Terri
