Hi Terri, It’s been 5 weeks since I had a one night stand with an older Male. I am a male and had protected very quick anal sex and unprotected oral. There was kissing and body contact as well. He told me afterwards that his wife has had ghsv2 since marriage, she takes daily suppressive therapy medication, and he claims that he’s always tested negative. He tested negative Feb 2019 and after our encounter March 2021. He said he took the Quest Real time PCR test, which I know isn’t reliable. I have had no text book symptoms however on day 25 of potential exposure, I got some hemorrhoid issues. Prone to it in the past and caused by sitting on toilet and I think eating spicy food made it worse. I’ve had no pain, no bleeding, normal bowl movements, but slight itching in the beginning. Doctor said it’s most likely just hemorrhoids. It’s been about 10 days since I’ve had on and off discomfort, generally when I’m sitting and working all day. No pain or blisters in the anal region besides the hemorrhoid(s) that are still there / shrunk. I can’t seem to shake it off that this could just be a mild case of gshv2 or if it’s just a coincidence with hemorrhoids and the timing of everything. I’ve also been constantly touching my anus to look for blisters and pain which may have irritated it. The discomfort has been on / off so I’m looking to see if you have any insight that could help me. Since gshv2 in the anal could be confused with hemorrhoids, have you seen similar situations? I haven’t done blood work yet because it’s been too soon since the potential exposure. Any thoughts or advice to my situation would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Terri,
Not sure you got a chance to review my situation. From your experience, what is the likelihood of transmission from my encounter?
Thanks in advance.

Your symptoms don’t really sound like herpes to me. With her on suppression, this decreases your risk of acquiring HSV 2 IF he is infected and doesn’t know it.
Any symptoms that developed 25 days after the sexual encounter are very unlikely to be new herpes – the timing is too long. Most everyone who get symptoms with a new infection do so within 2-10 days.Terri

Hi Terri,
Thank you for the response. Last question: Let’s say he is infected but is asymptomatic, what are the chances of transmission after one encounter with protected anal sex and unprotected oral?
Thanks.

We don’t have accurate numbers for that – I would say less than 1 in 100 but if he is shedding virus at the time of your contact, it is higher.
