Hi Terri,
I need some clarification regarding antiviral medication. I know that taking antivirals will lead to a false negative HSV2 result but will it also affect the results for HSV1? Meaning, is it possible to be on antiviral medication and still have a positive result for HSV1? Also, is it possible for my doctor to order individual igg testing, specifically for HSV2, or does this type of test usually include both 1 & 2?
Thank you.
Taking antiviral medicine too soon every day after a new infection can cause a false negative antibody test, that is correct. And that is correct for new HSV 1 or new HSV 2. It is possible to be on antiviral medicine and still have a positive HSV 1 antibody test, yes, if the infection is older. Normally the testing includes both HSV 1 and HSV 2.
The medicine impact is only on new infections, it does not impact antibody detection from old infections. Does that make sense?
Terri
