I was diagnosed with HSV2 last week. I’ve been reading your book, and have a question about meds. I was prescribed Acyclovir 400 mg 3/day to manage my outbreak. I’d like to do everything possible to never have an outbreak again! My doctor seems to think I should just wait & see what happens. As we don’t seem to be on the same page, I plan to find a different doctor. I saw in your book that Valtrex has better bioavailability, I’m wondering if I should insist that I use it instead of what I was initially prescribed. I have difficulty with absorption based on having gastric bypass 5 years ago.
Valtrex has better bioavailability which means you can take it only once per day. But acyclovir 400 mg twice a day (or three times a day) very day does just as well as dealing with herpes, you just have to take it more often to get that effect. I’m not clear how your surgery might impact the use of these herpes medicines. With either drug, it is possible that you will break through and have an outbreak. That doesn’t mean it isn’t working, it’s just what happens with these medicines.
There is no reason that a person should not switch to daily therapy as long as they have good kidney function.
