So, I’ve been Asymptomatic for probably yearssssss. I was recently diagnosed but been in a monogamous relationship for 8 years. I now have a new partner and is the reason I got tested. I was told that Asymptomatic still shed so to be safe to take a daily antiviral to prevent transmission. I thought I was being responsible but now I feel sooo stupid for taking acyclovir.
It’s the 5th week and I have still not started to heal. No sores, but stinging, redness, and inflammation that caused discoloration. No real pain, just discomfort for about 3 days during the 3rd week. Other days mild discomfort or barely notice.
I have 3 questions, so i know im using my follow up questions.
My main fear and concern is will the discoloration heal? The Inner lips and inner walls turned a dark color.
My other concern that I am freaking out about is, will I return to being Asymptomatic or continue to have outbreaks?
My last concern is since I most likely had the virus for years…. does the length of time start over because acyclovir woke it up? I read that you shed less over time and more contagious when first exposed.
I feel like an idiot because it had been years and Asymptomatic shed less. But if acyclovir woke it up now I’m possibly going to shed more than I was if I don’t go back to being Asymptomatic. It’s all so confusing because I thought acyclovir was supposed to suppress the virus even more to not shed.

I do want to add that’s it quite possible I’ve had it since childhood or over a decade. As, I recently learned that hsv is not included in std testing unless specifically requested. The first doctor i spoke with at the time of the diagnosis said I didn’t need to take medicine and just watch out for any tingling. Then another doctor told me to take it to prevent transmission.

Wait – exactly how were you diagnosed and what type of HSV do you have?

What was the index value of your IgG test? If it were below 5.0, I would recommend a confirmatory test. Acyclovir would never cause you to have herpes symptoms so that’s not what is going on here. Let me know the value of your test result. Also, herpes does not cause symptoms for weeks as you are having

Index value was 23. There were a few people on a reddit forum who had the same reaction though… they were asymptomatic as well.. so I’m still taking it every day. I think its been 7 weeks now. Multiple people said it lasted 4-5 weeks. That means I need to stop taking the medicine? Do you do doctor appointments as well? I’ve never had any issues and have no other stds. It started immediately after taking acyclovir. Itching/tingling… inflammation… and now sporadic light tingling..
