Baby (18 months) had a fever and gingivitis with sores which we thought was HFM. I had sores on my nipples which I thought was from him biting through a fever. I also got a sore on my right hand finger, which the doctor swabbed and to our surprise it came back HSV1, which I’ve never had and we don’t know how he got it! Obvious primary outbreak as I ended up with sores through my mouth, on both nipples and strep throat.
My question is, once blisters on nipples have healed could I continue breastfeeding or will sores keep coming back if the nipples are agitated?
Am I safe to breastfeed any future children?
Should I go on antivirals in order to avoid future whitlow outbreaks potentially spreading to my child’s body, eg nappy changes, if I am presymptomatic but potentially viral? At this stage it seems only his mouth was infected.
that’s very interesting. Someone with a cold sore or just testing positive for HSV 1 must have kissed your child and then you must not have been previously infected with HSV 1 for all this to happen. It sounds quite unpleasant to me.
Your baby already has HSV 1 so I see no issue in continuing to breastfeed this baby.
Now that he is infected orally, it is extremely unlikely that he would get this in a new location so I wouldn’t worry about you transmitting whitlow to him in a new location, after he’s been infected for about 3 months.
I’m not sure about future baby’s nursing – I’m going to ask someone else and will get back to you.
Terri
