Hello,
I’m a 40 year old woman and I contracted HSV-1 in my genital area around 5/6 years ago from receiving oral sex from an individual with cold sores. I accidentally passed it to my ex soon after I contracted it because I wasn’t aware yet that I was positive. Since then I only have around 1 or 2 outbreaks a year and it’s a singular bump on my anus. I have a new partner now and wanted to know what are the chances of me passing it to him if he performs oral on me? Would it be a good idea to start taking antivirals to further decrease how much I shed and the chances of passing it to him?
By the time someone has had HSV 1 genitally for about 2 years, the average number of days that they shed virus is 4 in a year. If you are having one to two outbreaks a year, that is more than the average, which is one every other year. Do you know that your partner is HSV 1 negative? has he tested or has he ever had a cold sore? About half the population in the US has HSV 1 so it might be good to find out. If he is very worried about transmission of HSV 1, you could go on suppression, yes. But since shedding is so infrequent already, we don’t know how much benefit that would provide. it certainly wouldn’t hurt.
Terri
