Dear Terri,
Thanks for this awesome website and hope you are doing well.
I had protected sex with a new partner (me, male 29 and she female 32)
Twice in the same night, one time, like 5 minutes, and soft, the second time, 10 minutes, a bit more intense. The condom was rolled to the base and did not break for both occasions. No oral sex involved. Positions involved missionary and doggy
I am male circumcised, and in the vaginal area, she had no, let’s say, physical blister symptoms or anything else that seemed problematic.
I use clippers to shave my pubic area but had a bit of hair not like clean shaven no cuts i think?. My background is American, and I tested for all STDs negative in the past (Including herpes). She is from Turkey, but we met in Germany, where we work. She has had four partners (unprotected/protected and never has been tested) and says she has never had symptoms before. She has a DIU.
So, I have a couple of questions so far:
1. STDs like Hiv, Hepatitis, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea should be okay since the penis head is covered?
2. How likely is my risk of herpes/Syphilis?HPV?3. I recently broke up with a girlfriend but plan to get back together. Can I proceed to have unprotected sex with her, or should I get tested?
4. How would you asses the situation, and should I be on the lookout if symptoms develop, lest, say, the base of the penis or pubic area?Thank you in advance for your help. It has been 4 days since the encounter and so far no symptoms.
Thank you!

Yes, for sure
2. How likely is my risk of herpes/Syphilis?HPV?
I would say low. Condoms reduce transmission of herpes by 65% and the others, a similar amount. Most every sexually active person has had HPV of one kind or another.3. I recently broke up with a girlfriend but plan to get back together. Can I proceed to have unprotected sex with her, or should I get tested?
I think testing is not necessary from a medical point of view, and don’t test for HSV, given high rates of false positive, but yes to syphilis and the other ones except HPV to eliminate and possibility of infection for you and so you can come back to your girlfriend, feeling really certain.4. How would you asses the situation, and should I be on the lookout if symptoms develop, lest, say, the base of the penis or pubic area?
If you develop symptoms at the base of the penis, have them swab tested right away. I doubt that you will.

Hi Terri,
Thank you very much for your feedback and hope you are doing well.
If thats ok since I have two more follow ups I will ask some more questions.
My gf came back and well, I have avoided sex with her due the previous event.
It has been day 6 after protected sex and no symptoms.A bit of more info:
1. We did it twice vaginal protected (no oral sex at all) and every-time I would go clean myself only with Warm water, I do not know if that helps or not?
2. Day six still no blister symptoms like in those on the pictures? Good sign?
3. I did notice an ingrown above the public area right after the session maybe 24 hours after, so I know thats not herpes, right?
4. You say that from a medical point of view you would not recommend testing but to be safe I should still test?5. The condom did not break and cover the whole penis, you mentioned that HPV everyone has and its fine, but what is the likelihood of Syphilis and Herpes. If so, what should be my next steps? Proceed to unprotected sex or test before? Thank you and kind regards,

probably won’t make a different2. Day six still no blister symptoms like in those on the pictures? Good sign?
Good sign, not definitive3. I did notice an ingrown above the public area right after the session maybe 24 hours after, so I know thats not herpes, right?
Nope
4. You say that from a medical point of view you would not recommend testing but to be safe I should still test?
The IgG test has so many false positives which is why we no longer recommend it for screening but if you do it and it is positive, we should discuss what to do next. But I would not recommend the IgG test until at least 8 weeks have passed since the other encounter.5. The condom did not break and cover the whole penis, you mentioned that HPV everyone has and it’s fine, but what is the likelihood of Syphilis and Herpes. If so, what should be my next steps? I think we’ve covered herpes. Syphilis would be unlikely but you can safely test for that.
I didn’t say HPV was fine. I said it was common in sexually active adults. Using a condom with your regular partner until the testing has been done at the appropriate time would be the most cautious approach.Terri

Hi Terri,
Thanks for the follow up!
Since this is my last questions and in case of something new. I will be more than happy to buy some additional questions but mean while:
1. I did have protected vaginal sex and no oral. I will test for Chlam and Gono after 9 days just to be sure of those.
2. It has been 7 days and still no symptoms or signs, I have been tested in the past for both HSV 1/2 IGG. Negative, if I was to display symptoms, they would be in the first two weeks after the encounter in the area that it is protected by the condom? How likely would you think it will happen? or that I was infected?
3. I will test for HIV/Syphilis at 6 weeks just to play it safe as you mentioned.
4. Overall, if i do not display symptoms of herpes in the next 14 days after contact and given my history of no symptoms. Would you recommend to test before I have unprotected sex?
5. I will keep you updated if anything changes, thank you! -

I think it is very very unlikely that you became infected at these encounters.3. I will test for HIV/Syphilis at 6 weeks just to play it safe as you mentioned.
OK but I would be truly shocked if positive4. Overall, if i do not display symptoms of herpes in the next 14 days after contact and given my history of no symptoms. Would you recommend to test before I have unprotected sex?
If the testing was better I would say yes, but there are so many false positives and with you having no symptoms, and you fully used a condom, I would say no.Terri
