Hello –
I have been HSV-1 since as long as I could remember. I got a cold sore on my lip on August 13th and it was fully cleared up by August 20th. I take Valacyclovir 1000g pill at the first sign of an outbreak and continue that until it’s cleared up. I also up my L-Lysine dosage and apply aciclovir on the sore. So it cleared up fairly quickly.I’m with a partner and didn’t see him for 10 days to make sure I didn’t infect him. My sore was completely healed at this point.
On Day 10 we kissed. Day 14 we engaged in sexual activity (oral sex and sex).
I wake up today with a red mark on my upper lip (not the same exact site as my previous infection but close by). I start panicking of course and take my Valacyclovir again. I also want to note that I have never had two outbreaks back to back so this is new for me.
I am panicking thinking that I might have infected my partner. Is it possible and highly likely that I could have transmitted this to him, even though the cold sore popped up days later?
Please advise. Thank you so much!

I forgot to add that the new cold sore popped up 2 days later after having oral sex + kissing.

I’m not at all clear that what you are describing is actually a new cold sore, are you? Has the red mark progressed to a cold sore? Do we actually know that your partner is negative for HSV 1?

Hi Terri –
The red mark did turn out to be a cold sore, just not a big one and not as prominent as others I’ve gotten. It cleared up fairly quickly as well.I’m not sure if he’s negative for HSV-1 but he’s getting tested this upcoming week and hopefully we’ll know for sure.

That will be very helpful in determining his risk of acquiring HSV 1 from you through oral sex, yes

So yes it’s highly possible that I could’ve transmitted it?
Another sore popped up today, it’s the 3rd one in about a month. I’m devastated as I don’t know what is causing all of this.
My previous sore had healed completely and I kissed my partner this past weekend. He’s getting tested tomorrow, so we’ll have a better idea of whether he has it already or could’ve possibly acquired from me.

You might want to consider a course of suppressive antiviral meds if you continue to get frequent cold sores. The appropriate dose is 500 mg of valacyclovir daily. If your partner is positive for HSV 1, we cannot know for certain if it is from you unless he tested negative before he was with and is positive now.
