Hello, I’m a 48 yr old male who received oral sex from someone overseas. After 4 days, I started getting flu-like symptoms and a burning/painful sensation in my penis and in the general groin area. After 6 days of possibly contracting something, I went to see a doctor and they tested me for STDs. The doctor then prescribed Zithromax and then subsequently doxycycline. The test came back negative on everything including hsv-1 and hsv-2. Apparently, it did not even reach equivocal levels. of course, the test was taken before the medication was prescribed. After about 11 days after possibly contracting something, the burning in the groin area continues but the pain has somewhat abated. Besides a few very small reddish bumps on my scrotum, I have not experienced any lesions or blisters. I’m not sure if me getting the flu is related at all to the burning or if the anti-bacterial medication is blocking any possible herpes outbreak. I have read that the appearance of lesions/blisters is usually accompanied by flu-like symptoms but this does not seem to be the case. Can you suggest to me what are the next steps I should take? Should I wait another week or so before I test for herpes again?
Please help,

The herpes that you would acquire from receiving oral sex would be HSV one. Have you ever in your life have a cold sore on your lip or in your nose? If the answer is yes, it would be extremely unlikely to acquire this in a new location on your body. And if you have acquired herpes from receiving oral sex, I would expect lesions to appear on the shaft of the penis, not on the scrotum. If you want to test again, I would suggest waiting 10 to 12 weeks from the experience and if you can’t do that, you could take the test again sooner but do a final test at 10 to 12 weeks. The problem is, that the traditional antibody test misses 30% of HSV one infections.

Hello Terri,
thanks for getting back with me. Im not so sure if I ever received a cold sore in the mouth area but it’s quite possible that I have. It does look like a sore is developing on the penis and the burning sensation is continuing but it is not as severe. Is it possible at all to get hsv2 from oral sex or would it be solely hsv1? Also, what is the possibility of getting further outbreaks with hsv1?

It is almost impossible to get HSV 2 from receiving oral sex. If you have something developing on your penis, please go immediately to have it evaluated in person. If a person contracts HSV 1 genitally, it rarely recurs.
