Hi,
I have recently taken a herpes test and gotten my results. The results are
HSV 1 IGG, SER, QL
0.12
HSV 2 IGG, SER, QO (HIGH)
1.88
HSV IGM (Abnormal)
Positive
Referance range: NegativeHSV IGM, TITER
Report
(Note)
Has been addedHSV 2 IGM
Report
(Note)HSV 2 IGM, TITER
Negative
Referance range: NegativeMy questions is, what does all this mean. This test was taken 6 weeks after exposure. My Doctor said that the virus has been dormant in my system since I have never had any systems or breakouts. Can you explain what these tests results indicate. I’ve been reading alot about a false positive being below 3.5, could this be true for me since I have never experienced any symptoms?
Also, me and my girlfriend have unprotected sex and she also has no symptoms. I don”t know what’s going on.
According to the paperwork the test was conducted by Quest Diagnostics Nicholas Institute, Chantilly, VA.
Please shed some light one this.
Thanks in advance

Your HSV 1 is negative but your HSV 2 is positive at a low level. It could certainly be a false positive yes. Anything between 1.1 and 3.5 may be a false positive. You need a herpes western blot as a confirmatory test. Our clinic can order that for you if you need help with that. Has your girlfriend been tested? If not, she should be . When was the last time you had sex with anyone else besides her?
Please ignore the IgM test results – they are not reliable.
If your girlfriend is negative, there is a stronger chance that this is a false positive.

Hi Terry,
If you order the WB Test how would I take the blood test? Do you order it at a facility and I report there to take the test and they send it out? Also, what is the total cost with shipping and handling?
Is it possible/true that the virus has been in my system and I never knew?
My last sexual encounter with someone else besides her was 6 weeks before the test.
Thanks in advance

You call the clinic, we set up a phone consult and figure out where to order the test drawn. Then you go there, have blood drawn, it is sent to UW and they send me the results and I contact you with the results. The total cost of the consult, western blot and shipping is $250. You pay that at the time of the consult.
Yes, it is possible that you have the virus and you never knew.
If you got infected 6 weeks ago, you may not have a positive western blot yet. Have you possibly talked to the other partner and encouraged them to be tested? I would advise waiting 16 weeks from the last time you had sex with someone whose status is unknown to do the western blot.

Thanks Terri,
I’ll follow up with you later to take the WB Test. Has anyone on this forum tested low that did the test through you and the Western Blot test confirmed a false positive?
Thanks for everything

Yes, definitely! About half the people who have a low positive ELISA are false postives!
