Hello,
I should start off by saying i am male and I tested positive for hsv1 2 years ago, negative for hsv 2. Never got a cold sore or sores generally so not sure what location I have it, I always just assumed it was oral as hsv1 is commonly linked to oral hsv. Have not been retested since then. After unprotected intercourse at the start of august this year. I started noticing what felt like an itching in my genitals. It would come for a few days and go on its own. I noticed the itch would come after sexual intercourse with the same person and the cycle repeated, still no sign of sores or lesions. Did a test and tested negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago where I began to have pain/burning, sometimes shooting pains down my legs, specifically back of thighs, feet, knee joints, ankles, hips and sometimes back and butt. Only problem now is they’re pretty constant. Have felt relief from them for maybe 2-3 days in the past 3 weeks, sometimes they’re more intense sometimes less, overall the pain is pretty light to moderate but noticeable enough for it to bother me.
I keep waiting for sores/lesions as I feel these are prodrome but never get any. Can this truly be herpes prodrome symptoms or could they be something else? Like I said i was diagnosed with hsv1 (didn’t get an igg value, just a “positive” on my report). Could this be ghsv1 that’s been dormant for a while. I figure I couldn’t have recently contracted ghsv1 if I already had ohsv1 as I’ve built enough antibodies. Now my worry is I’ve contracted hsv2. Is it worth getting tested or wait until when/if I see sores. Just have a lot of questions/worries. Looking forward to your input. Thank you.
Do you know the HSV 1 and 2 status of your current partner?
This could be due to herpes, yes. I think testing is possible, but we are really concerned about false positives on the IgG test (never do IgM testing). If you do test, and your value is under 8, you will need confirmatory testing, in my opinion. There is no way to know if your HSV 1 infection is oral or genital without a lesion in either location to swab test.
