I touched a cold sore then my vagina (just my pubic area). When I realized I immediately took a shower and did some googling. I read that once you have the antibodies you can’t reinfect yourself. I’ve had ohsv1 for 15 years. About 2-3 weeks after that I experienced severe genital burning everywhere on my vagina, and buttocks that would all sometimes burn at the same time or just move around and (I think) nerve pain in my inner thighs and buttcheeks (by nerve pain I mean burning sensations there as well). This has been happening constantly everyday for over three months. I cannot get a blood test because I already have the hsv1 virus and there’s nothing to swab. About 2 months after this burning and everything started, I was having intravaginal pain. I have inflammation inside the opening of my vagina with no lesions. Steroid cream seems to help. My gynecologist says he thinks it’s genital eczema but it just doesn’t make sense there is itchiness but no rashes. He also said he doesn’t know what would be causing the nerve pain. He says it’s not herpes. I started having the worst stinging pain in my inner thigh I couldn’t walk cause even my pants touching my skin was excruciating. It’s so painful I have barley left my bed in months. I’ve also experienced random tingles usually in my legs that only last a second or two and aren’t localized-move all around like the burning. My newest symptom is itchiness (especially right after I wake up for some reason) this has been happening for about a week now. I occasionally get some redness, in different areas, but that disappears within a couple hours to a day max. I’m so confused because I’ve read some stories of people saying they experience constant prodrome/nerve pain from hsv and I’ve seen a lot of people say that if it’s prodrome it would last 2 days max and I wouldn’t experienced such pain in the absence of sores.Does this sound like herpes to you, would ghsv cause constant everyday symptoms for 3.5 months with no lesions?

Once you have a well established oral infection, it is extremely unlikely you would then acquire this genitally. Since you just touched the pubic area, that skin is too thick for virus to penetrate the skin. If you have something so severe that you haven’t been hardly able to get out of bed for two months, this has zero to do with herpes and I hope you are pursuing excellent medical care.

It’s been 4 very hard months. I have gone to almost 10 doctors and the er 3 times and haven’t gotten any answers or treatment. They just continue to do the same tests over and over. I got a referral for another gynecologist and had the appointment yesterday. He was no help either, but he agreed with my previous gyno that it is not herpes. He said that if the symptoms I am having were hsv related they would come and go with presence of lesions. And would not last near 4 months. I just have anxiety about it because the symptoms did start a couple weeks after that incident. Do you think I can completely rule out the possibility of it being herpes? Have you ever heard of someone experiencing hsv symptoms for this long with no physical outbreak?

Also sorry I forgot to mention- I get red marks. Sometimes they’re slightly raised but the most part they’re just tiny flat red patches. Sometimes I’ll have a couple around the same area but not clustered. They’re painless and sometimes I have a few of them at the same time spaced out on completely different areas.3 doctors have told me they’re folliculitis and there’s nothing to swab or worry about. I don’t know if I’m hyper aware I’m not sure if I’ve always had them and never noticed before and I’m just paranoid. I’m constantly evaluating down there now and I can’t tell what’s normal or if they’re related to my symptoms. I would think with all this pain I am having that if they were hsv lesions they would be painful too. I’ve even put alcohol on them and they did not burn or anything. Like I said painless, maybe slightly itchy sometimes but not the point were it’s bothersome, I have not shaved in 4 months so maybe that has something to do with it. I also knicked myself trimming near my inner vaginal lip. It was a little swollen and red but was not very painful just a little tender. About a week later in the exact area where I did that, a faint yellow mark/bump appeared (kinda looks like an enlarged sebaceous gland) I doesn’t hurt just still a little tender. Gyno looked at it and said didn’t look concerning. It’s been there for about 4-5 days not and it hasn’t burst, ulcerated, or changed appearance.Do you think these are related to the symptoms I’ve been having ? I know I should listen to my gynecologist, but I don’t really trust what he says. He told me you can catch herpes from the air which I don’t believe is correct and he just doesn’t seem to be very educated on hsv. And every time I ask questions he isn’t helpful ans doesn’t take the time to listen to me.

I don’t think your symptoms are related to herpes and you can’t catch herpes from the air, absolutely not!
If you are still worrying about herpes, you should obtain the western blot which is the definitive answer about whether you are infected or not. you’ve gone to doctor after doctor and getting the same answer. Why not get a final answer that is based on science, not opinion?Terri
