I was diagnosed with herpes through a swab test eight and a half years ago. I had my next outbreak less then three years later and no more since then. I recently had a blood test to confirm that I have type one, I have it vaginally and have never had a cold sore. My doctor told me that since I have not had an outbreak in over four years it is highly unlikely that I would pass it on even with shedding. Is this true?
I think it is unlikely that you will pass it on but there is absolutely no way you can know if you are shedding at any given time, just by the sensations you feel or the absence of an outbreak. Your recurrence pattern certainly fits with your HSV 1 diagnosis. Remember that you can safely have sex with someone else who has HSV 1 – either orally or genitally.
I wish I had a clearer answer for you about transmission – I can agree that it is quite unlikely but there are no certainties here.
Terri
