I received a blood test for HSV1 and HSV2 during a routine physical visit just because my doctor wanted to test for everything. After a week I receive a call from him telling me I’ve tested positive for HSV2. I was beyond shocked and scared and immediately started crying. I have never had any symptoms and had only had sex with my now ex boyfriend and a new partner (as new as a month ago) since my last test in 2022. My level for HS2 is showing at 1.6 LgG and the supplemental was negative. My doctor didn’t offer any explanations other than that I was positive and left me to read my own results. It wasn’t until I started researching online that I realized I might need to get a second opinion. I have ordered the test from Washington for some reassurance because I don’t know what to do. I’m having anxiety attacks thinking about having to tell my new partner that I could potentially be positive. I also go a second blood test today this time from Quest diagnostics (last time my test was sent to Labcorp). How should I go about telling my partner about this potential positive? Or should I wait until I have a more definitive answer?
Your index value of 1.6 is very low and the negative supplemental says that with a pretty high degree of certainty, this is a false positive result. There is good agreement between people who get negative supplemental tests from LabCorp and subsequently get a negative Western blot. I would be happy to work with you on obtaining the western blot if that’s what you would like to do. I am very optimistic that the IgG test is a false positive in your situation.
