Hello,
About a month ago I was experiencing really sharp pain in my abdomen. Around this time I was feeling an intense itching in my vagina and some thick white discharge. I took a yeast infection pill and it seemed to help with the itching and discharge. A couple days later I went to the ER and they diagnosed me with a bladder inflection. However the infection ended up coming back negative about a week later and I was told to stop the antibiotics. I was also diagnosed with having a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst and my period started that day.
A couple days later, I came down with a pretty bad flu and had deep aches in my pelvis, buttocks and groin area. I was still on my period as well. I was also coughing out yellow mucus and my nose was congested. My vagina seemed to be irritated however it did not look inflamed. I took two more yeast infection pills I went to the doctor and she examined me but saw nothing. I do not have any unusual discharge either. I got blood work for all stds which came back negative and she took cultures for vaginal infections which also came back negative. Now a month has past and I still feel the irritation in my vagina which feels inflamed but looks totally normal on outside. It is mostly on the right side of the vagina but occasionally I will feel irritation towards the front of it. I feel as though I have a lot of tension in my vaginal area. I also am getting random pains in my groin , buttocks and thighs. It is very distressing. I went to an obgyn about a week ago who said I looked perfectly normal down there and suggested I may have pulled a muscle. However this does not make sense to me and the pain still lingers. In the last month I have lost about 6 pounds and feel like I have lost much of my energy. I will also occasionally feel sharp pains in my upper back and a burning feeling in my feet, but this is not very often.
Any idea of what could be causing these strange symptoms? Thank you.

I will also often feel this deep aching on the side of my vagina. I am terrified that I could have an outbreak at any moment and these are prolonged prodrome symptoms. How likely is it to have prodrome symptoms that last a month without an outbreak?

I think herpes in this situation is extremely unlikely – nothing you describe sounds herpetic to me. And prodrome does not last for a month.

Hello thank you for your response. I truly believe I am suffering from Pudendal Neuralgia and have all the symptoms associated. I have the classic symptoms of vaginal burning , buttocks burning. Pain in the inner thighs and legs which is triggered by sitting and feet burning. This gets progressively worst throughout the day and has not ceased in 5 weeks. I just woke up and felt like my vagina
is burning. I am at a loss to what else could possibly cause this. I have never had any signs of lesions or blisters and I check every day and been examined by three different doctors. Have you heard of anybody with HSV having these symptoms without actually every having an outbreak? Tested 3 weeks after possible exposure which turned out negative. -

I have not had anyone with these symptoms and no lesions turn out to be positive, no. I recommend that you return to your doc and see if they have any thoughts but this would be very atypical for herpes. Please don’t jump to that conclusion.

Hi Terri,
Thank you for your responses. I decided to ask some more questions. I am continuing to have ongoing symptoms now for 9 weeks. The symptoms get worst through out the day. The vaginal burning comes and goes but I will often feel a deep ache on the right side of my vagina. I am also experiencing some urinary symptoms such as urinary frequency and some irritation after but not during urinating. Also some lower abdominal and pelvic pain. This seems to come and go every few days. In addition I have hip, sacral and leg pain.
I am curious to ask what exactly it means when they say people mistake herpes infections for yeast infections or UTIs,would a herpes uti be extremely painful? I only experience only mild discomfort and not really a burning feeling. I still have not seen any lesions or blisters and have now had about 8 thorough pelvic exams.

A herpes urethritis would be very painful with urination and perhaps last a week.
Your symptoms just don’t sound herpetic to me in any way.Terri

Hi Terry,
Now I seem to be having a tiny red scratch on my labia and a little bit of redness in an area next to it. This just occurred yesterday, I had a doctor check it out who dismissed it but obviously I am concerned. I heard that herpes can look like paper cut lesions?

My thighs are also now very achey.

The scratch seemed to disappear within a day. The next day I was diagnosed with a yeast infection based on my discharge and a uti based on a dipstick analysis however when I went in the next day to the doctors the urinalysis came out clean. Very confused by all these symptoms!I had a deep pain in my groin during this.

Hello,
I have some more additional questions. I recently took the igg test at 13 weeks past exposure. Before that I was on acyclovir for 9 days directly before taking the test. Would this have affected the results? Both HSV 1& 2 came back negative.

To clarify I actually took the igg test at 14 weeks and was on acyclovir exactly for 9 days prior for 3 times a day. Will antivirals turn a positive test negative?

I have EXACTLY the same symptoms. Because if this, I asked my PCP to run a blood test. The HSV1 was positive at 33.3 and HSV2 positive at 1.12. I have never had any signs of herpes before and have been married for 15 years and neither of us have been unfaithful and neither of us have ever had symptoms. I googled the symptoms I now have and thought it might be herpes, purely based on reading. I have been so stressed out and saw my gyn and even a dermatologist and an infectious disease doctor. The ID doctor said I was being paranoid and that most everyone would have a positive test. His diagnosis was HSV exposure. He said that didn’t mean I have herpes. I even took valtrex for about five weeks bc I had shingles 3/27/18. Valtrex didn’t help the symptoms you and I are having one bit. I have submitted my question, but have yet to receive an answer. I noticed you’ve submitted several questions and Terri has responded. The only difference is your test was negative and mine positive. I have never slept with anyone who had visible signs of oral or genital herpes and, even if I had, it was more than15 years ago, so why these symptoms and a positive test now? I’m confused. My question is from CaptainsMom if you’d like to follow my post and, hopefully and answer soon. I’ll be following yours, too.

Ahwhatisit, I need to clarify something about my post in response to yours…I’ve had a hysterectomy and didn’t have the ovarian cyst. Our other symptoms and treatment received, medications (including three yeast pills, Diflucan) were the same. I. However, had valtrex instead of acyclovir. I left off the pain I experienced. I had the flu in February that turned into pneumonia and was hospitalized for it and the UTI. I thought my yeast was from antibiotics. Please see my post for exact details. Again, I left out some of the same symptoms as yours, but I had the same, without the ovarian cyst.

This is all happening to me as well. I tested HSV 2 negative at 12 weeks, and then had protected sex after that and started experiencing all of the burning stinging and leg pain. Have we determined if this is herpetic? Should I get retested? My pain comes and goes throughout the day, is worse when I sit, switches legs, and last for weeks. It is on going.

@Captainsmom . You should really get the western blot test. FOR HSV2 there is a high false positive rate at your index. Terry can clarify that for you. Especially because you have a high HSV1 level. My doctor’s believe I have pelvic floor dysfunction which can cause a lot of the same symptoms and be exacerbated by stress. I am asking this additional question to Terry to see whether I need to retake the Igg test based on my acyclovir use

Antivirals will only impact the IgG tests if taken for more than two weeks immediately after first infection.

Hi Terri,
Do you think at this point it would be good to move forward from the idea of herpes? I still am struggling with the what if’s of this situation since I’m still having the symptoms especially pronounced around my period. Would my IGG test be very accurate with my negative testing at 14 weeks and the 10 days max of antivirals at 12.5 weeks?

With 92% certainty, you do not have HSV 2. If this is still concerning to you, get the western blot for greatest accuracy. Different people need different levels of confirmation that they are uninfected. My opinion is that you should do whatever you need to do to feel relaxed about this issue
