Woman of unknown HSV status performed oral sex on me close to 6 weeks ago. The other night, I was sitting in a chair and when I stood up I felt some pain near the tip of my penis. I assumed I just rubbed it roughly upon standing and didn’t think anything of it, although it kind of hurt for the rest of the night until I fell asleep.
The next morning I still had the pain and noticed a small red sore near the top of the meatus (I had to look up this term as I had no idea what to call it). It was red and looked kind of wet or shiny like a new cut or chapped skin. It was really small, like maybe 1mm or 2mm max, so it was hard to get a great look. Anyway, it felt somewhat uncomfortable all day. No pain or irritation when urinating, though. The cut/sore was completely gone within 36 hours of the initial pain.
Looked online to see if I could find any info and ran into a wealth of info about herpes. Of course, now I am obsessed thinking that’s what I have. Any thoughts? Any other info you need to help figure it out? Thanks.
I should also point out that I tested negative for HSV 1 & 2 about 4 months ago. The encounter mentioned in my initial post was my first sexual partner in about a year.
The risk from receiving oral sex is HSV 1.
Two things: 1) the screening test misses 1 out of 4 infections, compared to the gold standard, herpes western blot, so you could actually already have HSV 1 and the test didn’t pick it up and 2) a single encounter could result in new HSV 1 infection but I think your symptoms might be a bit more remarkable if you were truly negative for HSV 1 to start with and 3) Six weeks is a very long time from infection to first symptom – very long and not at all likely. The average time is 2-10 days though I’ve seen as long as 18 days – never six weeks. At some point you can retest, though the screening test, if it misses it once, usually misses it a second time. But if you have new HSV 1, it could now be positive. You could retake the IgG test at 12 weeks from exposure (or even now but it is too soon to rely on a negative). Generally if something is that tiny, it is not likely to be herpes but I can’t say that for certain. Let me know other questions you have here.
