      Hi Terri,

Thank you so much for providing this service. I’m a 42 year old male who recently (2 months ago) started dating someone that has oral HSV1, she’s 38. I’ve had an antibody test that show negative for HSV1 and HSV2. She has had the infection since childhood and has outbreaks 1-2 times a year. I always assumed if we refrained from physical touch and sex from the start of symptoms (tingle on lip) to when the outbreak is completely healed I was safe from infection. We’ve had protected sex and unprotected oral sex since the start of the relationship. I’ve shown no symptoms but want to make sure I’m safe moving forward. She’s also volunteered to go on daily anti-viral medication to help prevent transmission.

What do you think my chances are of getting infected during the asymptomatic shedding? This is something I’ve recently learned about. Should I insist on using a condom during oral sex too?

      Thank you!

Unfortunately, we don’t have data about the rate of oral to genital or oral to oral transmission of HSV 1. However, her taking daily antiviral medication would certainly reduce your risk of becoming infected with HSV 1. And if you are still concerned, using a condom to receive oral sex would certainly reduce the risk to very close to zero.
