I am in an open relationship. My partner was just diagnosed with hsv-2 genitally, and his other partner ended up getting hsv-2 genitally as well. Both are experiencing their first primary outbreaks. I have been tested and do not have hsv-2. My question is about oral sex. Can he give it to me if he performs oral sex on me (as in does viral shedding occur in his mouth too, or can he get hsv-2 orally if he gives oral sex to his other partner, then performs oral sex on me?

Unless there is a 4th person involved here, both are NOT experiencing their primary outbreaks. they might be experiencing their first recognized outbreak but one of them is experiencing a recurrence.
If he gives oral sex to the other person who has HSV 2, he could acquire HSV 2 orally though that is unlikely but not zero risk. If he gets it orally, he could conceptually pass it to you by giving you oral sex but that is also quite unlikely.Terri

This will be my follow up question #1 and #2 for my membership.
1. Can I catch HSV-2 if he ejaculates and some of the semen gets on any area of my body that has mucosal lining, i.e. mouth, vaginal area, anal area?
2. Does HSV-2 shed in oral area if he only has outbreaks in genital area?

That is possible but not very likely2. Does HSV-2 shed in oral area if he only has outbreaks in genital area?

Thank you for your answers. I have purchased an additional round of 3 questions.
#1/3 Since I am HSV-2 negative, is there any benefit to taking Valtrex prophylactically pre and post coitus to decrease transmission from my partner to me?

There is no known benefit from you taking antivirals, no. Many have asked.

#2/3 What period of time is the newly injected considered to be most infectious? I read that it was the first 6 months or the first 1 year. I know they can always be infectious bc of asymptomatic shedding, but I wanted to know if viral shedding is higher the first 6 months or year?
#3/3 silly question, but will wearing tight fitting boxer during sex (to cover the boxer region that can be infectious)and a condom provide another layer of protection ?

The first 6 months is correct.
Yes, I would think boxers would add some protection but I don’t know how muchTerri

Thank you Terri,
I have purchased my 3rd round of questions.#1 Since studies say that condom use reduces transmission by 96% for male to females, and Valtrex suppressive therapy will reduce it by 50% (study done without condom use), will you say that if my partner takes Valtrex every day and we use condoms that transmission would be extremely unlikely?
#2. Oral HSV-2 outbreaks and oral shedding are a lot more infrequent then HSV-1. I am thinking about purposely trying to get infected with HSV-2 orally so that I will be forever protected against having HSV-2 genitally. What are your thoughts on this?
#3 My partner had tested negative for for HSV-2 and HSV-1 IGG in 2019 and swears he has not been unfaithful. His other partner has always been negative as well, and she got her first primary outbreak after he had his (So he basically gave it to her and that’s how both people ended up with primary outbreak from my first original posted question). He had his first primary outbreak in December, about 1 week after getting a massage. I’m sorry to be graphic, but I need to ask you because I want to know if I can trust what he is telling me. He says there was no intercourse involved. The massage girl had her fingers in her genital area and then proceeded to try to arouse him immediately after taking her fingers away from her genital area. When he realized what she was doing, he said no he wasn’t interested in that kind of massage. But he allowed her to continue to massage the area near his penis (inner thighs), but not the penis itself. She also straddled him and was grinding on his crotch area with a bikini on during the massage. Is this story believable? I want to believe him, and am wondering if it’s just dumb luck that he got infected this way, or if he is lying to me and probably had intercourse with someone infected.

You could do that I suppose – people have certainly done that. But would you then worry about infecting someone with HSV 2 by giving oral sex?#3 My partner had tested negative for for HSV-2 and HSV-1 IGG in 2019 and swears he has not been unfaithful. I think it is very difficult to answer this because what he did with the massage person and there might have been genital to genital contact that he’s not describing. If all of this is correct, then this is not a method of transmission but underwear slips and he may not have noticed. Also, you can’t really know for sure about the other partner and her experiences, regardless of what she says.
This is too complicated with too many moving parts for you to ever know how this happened, for sure.Terri

Hi Terri
One last question to clarify. Actually my partner said that the massage girl did not grind on his crotch at all (I was mistaken in thinking that) sorry to be graphic again, but She masturbated a lot to get her fingers lubricated when she tried to masturbate him. Since there was a lot of bodily fluid on her fingers when she touched his penis, is possible that he got infected this way?

No, I don’t believe so.
