Hello Terri,
On 12/3/22, I had unprotected anal sex and didn’t have what I would call any real symptoms until about two weeks later (12/19). I got an initial STI panel completed because my anus area was sore, itching, and I had a sore throat. Fast forward to this week and I got the results back from an IgM saying positive for both HSV1 and HSV2. Since then, I have read these are highly inaccurate and I plan to have IGG test performed tomorrow. With this all in mind, is it still too early to be testing with the IGG to have an accurate result?
Note: I haven’t had any symptoms besides those that I have mentioned and have not had any blistering yet of either mouth or genital area. I’ve tried to look at my anus to see why it remains sore, and I believe I see very small lesions, but I am unsure if this is from the unprotected sex or from soap/soap holder I use. Thank you for any advice.
An IgG now would give you a baseline for HSV 1 and 2, but yes, way too early to get a reliable answer and yes, the IgM is poor and often gives false positives.
The symptoms that you are experiencing could be due only to the trauma of anal sex but I would recommend that in this week coming up, you get a full STI screen for things like gonorrhea, chlamydia from the anus.
You can do a fairly reliable IGG test in 6 weeks – not perfect but OK
Terri
