Hello! Hope all is well with you. It’s been almost two years since my last sexual encounter. In November of 2011 I had my yearly and requested to be test for all stds including HSV 2. I have had HSV 1 since I was a little girl so it’s been about 30+ years. My test results came back 21.34 for HSV 1 and 0.94 Equivocal for HSV 2. Of course I freaked out, but I waited almost 3 months to be tested again. I wanted to make sure the results were accurate. This time it came back 0.92 Equivocal. Do I need to test again? I’ve read that since it’s been 2 years since the potential exposure and the test results are not positive, I should assume that I’m negative. I just started a new relationship and we haven’t had sex yet, but I don’t want to risk infecting him. I’ve never had an outbreak or anything. I just want to be sure I can’t give him anything. Thank you for your time.

We all appreciate everything you do.

I’m sorry, it was November 2021 not 2011.

I think the chance that you actually have HSV 2 is just incredibly low! In all my years of practice, I have only seen one person who tested in the equivocal range for HSV 2 and was positive on the western blot.

If you want the greatest certainty, you could do the blot but the chances of a positive are very very low.
