Back in October I had unprotected sex and about a week later I had a hard bump on the inside of my labia. It was not associated with a fever only a sore throat that I had from attending a wedding that weekend. I was still active and the bump went away a few days later. No pain when I peed, no scabbing and it was just the one bump. I showed a picture of the bump to an urgent care doctor and she did not express any concern. My sexual partners have had no symptoms. However the thought of the bump did not leave my mind so I decided in January to do an IGG blood test. The results for HSV 1 came back negative but results for HSV 2 came back equivocal. I have not had any other bumps since. I went to my gyno and we did a vaginal culture and an asymptomatic shedding test which all came back negative. Even with the negative test I am unable to get the idea of the equivocal test out of my head but do not want to do another blood test due to the lack of accuracy. What does this sound like to you?
      Thanks

If your contact was in October and your HSV 2 was equivocal in January, I think you are not infected and should not worry about this. In all of the people who had equivocal results for whom I have ordered western blots, only one has been positive. A very rare event. BTW, a negative swab test on an asymptomatic person really means nothing. If you want to repeat the IgG test, I don’t see why not. But if you get a low positive this time, you’ll need a western blot. Maybe best to just drop it?

Hi Terri, I did have contact with the same person Dec 4 and I believe my IgG blood test was taken January 14 so 6 weeks after another contact but not contact with whom I was worried about. I haven’t had any sexual contact since Dec. With that additional information do you still think this is something I should drop? Thank you

I think I would like to go ahead and move forward with getting the western blot test just to give myself piece of mind, are you able to assist and what are next steps. Thanks!

I am certainly able to help you with that. Just follow the link on this website to where it says get a westernblot. It will help you set up an appointment with me to discuss the blot and go over procedures about how to do it and then I will provide you with the necessary paperwork to get this done. In the meanwhile, I would suggest that you contact the University of Washington for the kit that is necessary to begin this process. Their phone number is 206-685-6066.
