Female 28 year old. Has been testing negative my entire sexual life. With a index value of <90. Had an unprotected sexual encounter (vaginal intercourse) and was tested 5 weeks later. Received an equivocal result of 1.00 . I was alerted that I tested positive despite it being listed as equivocal. Of course I’m scared and worried that I’m in the seroconversion period and that’s why my index value shot up by .10. Please help. Just for background information I’ve had oral HSV 1 my whole life i don’t even get tested for it anymore. My recent partner claims to be negative but i haven’t seen the results with my own eyes so I’m scared that the increase of the index value is a recent infection. I’m planning on getting retested at the 12 week mark but I don’t know if I can wait that long. If he provides me with a result and it’s negative I would be interested in having the western blot because I would like a definite answer as to what my status is. I was wondering what was the likelihood that I have HSV2 due to the increase of my index score? Also I know the body takes time to develop antibodies but the test says it can detect an infection as early as 4-6 weeks, so would I not have tested positive by now?

Also I haven’t experienced any symptoms whatsoever. While I do know that HSV2 can very well be asymptomatic I just wanted to include that.

I also tested negative in December of 2021 with an index score of <.90

I have only seen one person in 35 years who tested in the equivocal range go on to test positive by the western blot. So I think it is highly unlikely that you are infected. I think the time between the contact and the testing was a big short so if you still have concerns, I would suggest that you re-test at 8 weeks out

Thank you for responding! I wish there was a definite answer as to what would be the reasoning in an increase in the antibodies if it’s not due to a recent infection. I will take your advice and get retested. If it’s equivocal again I should assume that I’m negative?

That is the most likely explanation, yes. If you stay equivocal, I can’t promise that.
