I had an outbreak of sorts in May of 2017 in my genital area and in 1 spot on my butt cheek. The doctor told me that the outbreak in the genital area was HSV 2 and the outbreak on my butt cheek was shingles. I was given a blood test that came back positive for HSV 2 in June of 2017 (I can’t remember the exact number, but I do remember the doctor said it was a low positive). My doctor put me on suppressive therapy (acyclovir) and I have been on it daily since then.
I took another blood test for HSV 2 from LabCorp last week and the IgG results came back at 1.05. I’m confused. Am I positive or am I negative? Did the suppressive therapy cause a false negative?
Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Was any swab testing done from the genital lesions? If the outbreak in the genital area was indeed HSV-2 then probably the one on your buttocks was also. The fact that you have been on daily antiviral therapy would most certainly impact your development of antibody. If you have not had a swab test of a genital lesion, to confirm that you do have HSV 2, you may wish to consider coming off of daily antiviral therapy and either having an outbreak that can be swab tested to confirm your diagnosis or retesting by antibody test three months after coming off daily medicine.
