Hi I’ve been in a committed relationship for six months with the same woman. I’ve never had sex outside the relationship and I’m very confident that she hasn’t either, I’ve also never presented symptoms in the past or had an “outbreak”. After sex just recently I noticed a few small red bumps on the head of my penis and inner portion of the foreskin. I thought that it may be due to friction because she wasn’t fully lubricated at the beginning of intercourse and the same thing reoccurred a few days later when the original bumps had all but diminished and we had sex again, again she wasn’t fully lubricated. I had been sexually active with multiple partners in the past and regrettably some unprotected. Needless to say I went and got blood work done just to be safe. I got the results back and I was negative for hsv1 and positive for hsv2(<1.2) these were IGM tests and from what I’ve read can be extremely unreliable and have a reputation for giving false positives. Is it more likely to be an accurate reading because I didn’t test positive for hsv1? What’s the best test I can have administered to be sure? Are igg tests a far more reliable test? I also got a swab sample done of the bumps after they had occurred the second time but am still waiting on results.
The IgG is the most reliable test that is readily available – ignore the IgM completely. The very best test is the herpes western blot but is more complicated to obtain.
Terri
