Hi Terri – I recently had follow up IgG blood testing done 7 months following exposure after initial blood testing giving some confusing results. In March 2023 my testing was as follow
HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS I AND II AB IGG IGM W REFLEX was 4.28
HSV Type 1 Specific Ab IgG .08
HSV Type 2 Specific Ab IgG .20
My most recent testing from September 8 2023 is
HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS I AND II AB IGG IGM W REFLEX 4.32
HSV Type 1 Specific Ab IgG .10
HSV Type 2 Specific Ab IgG .58
I’m confused as to why my specific type IgG have remained not detected while my combined IgG has been detected twice? Is this something that’s typical? I thought seven months from my exposure and six months from last would be sufficient time for my specific IgG to have detectable antibodies? Is western blot my only option now to determine which type I have? I just want to make sure I’m protecting future partners moving forward. Thank you so much!
The combined test is very poor and has many false positives and should never have been done. Clearly the person who ordered it is unfamiliar with appropriate herpes testing. The values you should pay attention to are the negatives on the IgG test. Also, the combined test is an IgM, not an IgG and the CDC has long said never to use them to try to diagnose HSV
