Hi Terri
I couldn’t work out whether I had another question left but I’m pretty sure I did. If I’m wrong let me know and I’ll just pay again.
Hope you’ve been keeping well.
I was wondering if you knew much about generic valtrex and whether or not it is as effective for shedding and preventing transmission as the name brand? I took generic for a day because the pharmacy I went to didn’t carry the brand. I went and got the brand name again today because I am so worried. I was wondering if the generic works the same and whether it gives the same amount of protection against passing the virus to my boyfriend. Should I wait a while to have sex again until the medicine builds up in my body?
Thankyou
The FDA requires that generic drugs function within a very tight range of the branded drug so I would say yes, it is essentially the same and I would not worry about the difference. In fact, very good studies have shown that acyclovir at 400 mg twice a day works as well as 500 mg of Valtrex once per day. I try to prescribe acyclovir when possible for people who do a good job remembering to take pills as it is far cheaper.
You should wait 5 days from starting a new antiviral medicine to have it reach full functioning. I think you do not need to do that between the generic and the branded drug.
