I have been married for 15 years and we have been faithful. In May I had a bacterial infection on the top of my penis. My doctor swabbed just to see if herpes was active and sure enough it came back that I have GHSV1… my wife and I spoke and determined it was a first outbreak from previous relationships I had before we met when I fooled around a lot.
Since we found out that I’m positive, we have been using condoms for oral sex as well as sex.
My questions are:
If I have no OB and am taking daily meds, can we have unprotected sex?
If I have no OB and taking daily meds can she give me oral sex without her getting it?
One OB in my life so far.
Has your wife been tested to know that she is negative for HSV 1? If you’ve been married for 15 years and she doesn’t have it, then it suggests that you are shedding virus very infrequently. Or she could have given this to you through oral sex. I would suggest that if she hasn’t been tested, she should be. And remember that the IgG test misses 30% of HSV 1 compared to the western blot.
what you do about transmission is up to both of you. HSV 1 genital infection is rarely an issue, so that should influence your decision. You could take daily antivirals and have regular sex and the risk is very low but then it’s very low already!
