Hi Terri, I had the western blot test a few months back as a confirmatory test for positive HSV2 IgG results that turned out to be false positives. My western blot was negative for HSV2 but it was positive for HSV1. I do get cold sores. I have not had any sexual encounters since the blood drawn I had for the western blot. After the blot, I had deep kissing encounters with 2 different partners, HSV status unknown for both, and we’ve had very prolonged and deep kissing contact but still no sexual contact.
Are my negative HSV2 western blot results still valid? Since I have not had any sexual contact with anyone except for the kissing as I described. Do you recommend getting the western blot or IgG again to rule out oral HSV2?
My other question is, can it be possible to have both HSV1 and HSV2 orally? I guess my concern now is mainly about oral HSV2
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me!
You do not need to repeat the blot. I know of no cases of transmission of HSV 2 from mouth to mouth or mouth (HSV 2 positive ) to someone else’s genitals. is it possible? yes, is it likely, not at all!

Hi Terri,
Thanks for your response! I believe you missed my other question but that’s okay. I had also asked if it’s possible to have both oral HSV1 and oral HSV2 or does oral HSV1 protect against oral HSV2?
My follow up question is about my HSV1 status. The blot can’t differentiate between oral and genital. I get cold sores infrequently and never had genital breakouts (not that I am aware of). Can I assume I don’t have genital HSV1 or is it possible I have contracted genital HSV1 but I am asymptomatic?
Thank you!
There is some data that one type in on location MAY offer some protection against getting a second type at that location, though it is not definitive.
I think you should assume you are HSV 1 positive because you get cold sores.
Terri
