Background info: 31/F. I have had HSV-1 outbreaks by my inner eye/nose area for 17yrs and have been on daily 500mg valaciclovir for a few years due to frequent outbreaks around my eye. An eye area outbreak was swabbed within the last 3yrs and confirmed for HSV-1. Last September I had a small pimple in my genital area and due to having a cheating partner, I decided to get STD tested. They swabbed the area and it came back positive for HSV-1. I am now take 1000mg of valaciclovir daily. I have not had another genital outbreak but am definitely suffering from a personal sadness about the ghsv1. I have had a few outbreaks on my face since last September.
I’ve heard having HSV-1 in two different body parts is rare. Is there any way that the genital swab was inaccurate/any further testing I could do to confirm the diagnosis?
Another Question – what is the likelihood of transmitting the hsv 1 on my eye area and genital area? Any good data on this?
It is indeed uncommon, yes. But not impossible. So you got herpes by your eye before you were sexually active? Is that correct?
You are very unlikely to transmit the genital HSV 1 through intercourse. the eye infection suggests that you are infected orally as well, which is more likely to be transmitted than the genital one. HSV 1 strongly prefers the trigeminal nerve that supplies the mouth, nose and eye. We know about genital HSV 1 shedding and oral HSV 1 shedding and we use that as a surrogate marker for transmission likelihood.

Yes – I got hsv1 by my eye before being sexually active. I had kissed like 2 people at that point. So should I be concerned then with spreading hsv-1 via my mouth? No one has said that to me before. Can you point me to statistics so I can be informed when disclosing. Now I’m wondering if I gave the ghsv1 to myself.
I doubt that you gave yourself genital HSV 1 but if could have been possible when you were very first infected – so unlikely afterwards. You could transmit HSV 1 to someone by giving them oral sex, yes. If they already have HSV 1, like a cold sore history, that is not a worry.
