F (31) diagnosed with HSV 12 years ago. Another woman who was infected by the same man told me it was HSV 1. (I have zero proof). After my initial outbreak on both my vulva and my rectum I had absolutely zero symptoms for 7-8 years. I was on the birth control pill when I was diagnosed and Remained on it. However, when i decided to go off the pill I happened to suffer a severe back injury and from that time I had frequent (6 or more a year for 4 years) outbreaks but ONLY on my rectum. My Dr had me taking 500mg-1G valcyclovir daily as suppression- and it seems to balance it out, with only a few tingles but no actual lesions or open sores. I still feel my body is having a hard time suppressing this.
I do struggle with stress management and have a very stressful career path, working on mitigating that as I couldn’t hurt. Otherwise, I’m very healthy!
My question to you: should I get back on the birth control pill as a form of helping my body deal with this virus? I can’t help but reflect back to my first 7-8 years being on BC and not having any symptoms with HSV.
Interesting question. I have seen this in the past where hormonal changes the outbreak pattern. I would say perhaps you could go back on oral contraceptives and see how you do. What’s the harm? I guess the only harm could be that you might be more likely to transmit the virus to someone else if you stop taking antivirals.
