Hello Terri,
I was diagnosed with GHSV-1 in 11/2021. I had an initial outbreak that was severe with sores and swelling/irritation of my lymph nodes in my groin area. I had received it from my ex-gf (im a male) after oral sex. I have never had another outbreak since initial.
We have since broken up and I am looking to start dating other women. I have been told conflicting information from physicians so I am seeking out your advice. one said to not even disclose to partners because of how prevalent it is and how unlikely it is to transmit genitally, others have said basically the opposite (I plan in being up front). I have read online that the virus sheds roughly 4 days per year (after 2 years which I am approaching) and even when it is shedding it is “weakened” in the genital area.
I know there is not hard data, however in your work/knowledge of this virus what is the risk in transmitting this virus to someone through genital-genital contact? When it IS shedding is the chance high to spread it? is there anything else I should know about this virus to help protect other partners? Finally, is there any supplements or homeopathic remedies to help my immune system in specifically suppressing the virus in my nerves?
Thank you and have a great rest of your day!
We do have some hard data. The four days a year after two years of infection is correct. There is not data that suggests it is “weakened”.
When the virus is shedding, it can be transmitted.
Condoms also reduce transmission. Daily antiviral medication COULD also reduce transmission but we have no data about that for genital HSV 1.
Terri
Thanks Terri!
Quick follow up question:
In your professional career/opinion, is GHSV-1 easily spread genitally? do you see genital to genital transmission often with GHSV-1? and what about Genital to oral? (assuming partner is hsv-1 negative)
Thanks!
In my opinion and the opinion of all major herpes researchers, HSV 1 genital is very rarely transmitted during intercourse. And so would genital to oral be unusual as well. All of this is because HSV 1 is rarely shed from the genital tract.
