Background: 27 y/o female, diagnosed with GHSV-1 about 4.5 years ago after a partner performed oral sex on me while a cold sore was developing on his lip (no noticeable signs of the sore at the time). The OB was vaginal. After the initial outbreak (OB), I have been completely asymptomatic since. I took Valtrex during the initial OB only. I am now with a different partner, and am having my first recurrent OB, but on my anus. The lesions appeared as red bumps, not fluid-filled vesicles, and are far less painful than the initial OB. I have started Valtrex again. I am in a period of extreme stress, and that is what I believe caused the recurrent OB.

      My questions to you are:

Having GHSV-1 now for almost 5 years asymptomatically and getting another OB, does this increase my risk of future OBs?

What are the risks of my partner catching GHSV-1 either orally or genitally with anti-virals& condoms or anti-virals alone?

      Thank you.

I forgot to mention that my partner is a male.

So sorry to ask another question, but I thought of a third.

After extensive reading of this forum, I have seen few posts about people with GHSV1 spreading to their partners orally or genitally and I understand HSV-1 does not like the genital region. My partner is HSV-1 negative — am I more likely to transmit it to him orally or genitally?

Did you have your symptoms swab tested to know that they are herpes?
One outbreak in five years does not suggest anything about your future with HSV 1 genitally. It is very unlikely to continue to break out often.

Transmitting it to him at this point, either from him giving you oral sex or having intercourse with you, is very unlikely!
