Hi Terri, I’m F and was diagnosed with GHSV1 via swab test 2 months ago. I had done bloods done recently before this and was neg for type 1 and 2.
Approx 5 weeks after being diagnosed I disclosed and had protected sex with a man. I did unprotected oral on him. I had no visible symptoms and had been on antivirals for 4-5 days. He unfortunately contracted it off me, (confirmed same type via swab) the sores showed up at the top of his shaft approx 4 days later.
My questions are:
1. Does this likely mean I have OHSV1 without symptoms given we used a condom and where the sores showed up?
2. Do you suggest I should avoid sex until the 6 month point? I will be continuing to take the antivirals but I’m fearful of giving it to someone else again.
3. I’ve heard about people having internal outbreaks. How do I know if that is happening given i had no prodome symptoms with my initial outbreak? Thanks so much!

that is possible, but it is also possible that the condom was not fully covering the area where he had an outbreak. Viral shedding is most common in the first 3-5 months of being infected with genital HSV 1. The fact that you were on antivirals and he used a condom both should have reduced this risk greatly, so it is possible that you have it orally as well – no way to know for sure without an outbreak there. Are you certain that he acquired HSV 1?2. Do you suggest I should avoid sex until the 6 month point? I will be continuing to take the antivirals but I’m fearful of giving it to someone else again.
Maybe that would be a good idea but the odds that this happened with your precautions in place are so low!3. I’ve heard about people having internal outbreaks. How do I know if that is happening given i had no prodome symptoms with my initial outbreak?
You cannot know this without a speculum exam from a professional.Terri

Thank you for the reply.
The sores showed up at the top of the shaft near the head. Do the sores always show up where the virus entered the body? Or could I have infected him towards the base but sores still presented in that top area? I will be doing protected oral in the future just to be safe.
The swab was definitely confirmed as type 1 yes.
Sorry one more question. My initial outbreak was the typical ulcerated lesions. With being on antivirals, if I were to have an outbreak, is it still usually obvious to differentiate between that and normal pimples or can they present very mildly like that?
Thank you

I think you likely can differentiate between an outbreak and something else. Herpes lesions are filled with clear fluid. Pimples have white pus in them. But you could easily have a single lesion that isn’t dramatic with a recurrence. In terms of sex with him, you both have it, I think you don’t need to worry about this any longer.

Hi Terri
I’m not still seeing this person. I’m just worrying about infecting future partners and wondering if you think I more likely infected him with my mouth or genital. Which is why I was wondering if sores show up where it entered the body? Thank you 🙂

Sores do show up where the virus enters the body, yes. Sometimes people have HSV 1 both orally and genitally – they receive oral sex from and kiss the same person. But without a sore to swab in either location, it just isn’t possible to know this.
