Hi terri!
I (female) was diagnosed with genital herpes about 10 years ago following a painful vaginal outbreak. I just recently did an IgG test and it was positive for hsv1 (3.1) and negative for hsv2 (0.2). I recently had a sexual encounter which only involved heavy kissing and the individual fingering me. I had no outbreak or symptoms of an outbreak at this time. A few seconds later those fingers were put in my mouth and I licked them for about a second. Fast forward 2 weeks I’m experiencing tingling on my upper lip, which is slightly swollen and itchy. Though I was told that they look normal. 3 days later I have no bumps or redness from what I can tell, and the itching is more toward the inner center of my lip than the rim/ outline. Besides what appears to be dry skin, I have no other symptoms. I did apply lysine and take valtrex on the 2nd day just incase.
My question is, how likely is it that I have given myself oral hsv1 from that encounter? I would like to add that I am not aware of ever having a cold sore. I would randomly get tingly lips and itching but it would go away within a day, which I attributed my to anxiety.
Also, is it possible that I have always had it orally and never had an outbreak until now? (How would I know without any sores present? Given I am already positive for hsv1- genitally)
Thanks in advance
it is extremely unlikely that you would have transferred HSV 1 from your genitals to your mouth – so unlikely. Once you have HSV 1 in one location, you will rarely get it in a new location. I think the tingling and itching can well be attributed to your anxiety .
