Just for background, I’m female and I’ve had HSV2/genital herpes since I was 17, nearly 30 years ago. I took suppressive acyclovir for a few years while in a relationship and then stopped. My outbreaks have become more and more rare, at one point occurring every year or two and now it’s been multiple years.
I have a new boyfriend (7 or 8 months now). He has HSV1 and gets occasional outbreaks of cold sores on his lip, mostly triggered by sun exposure. I thought I was immune and wasn’t concerned, but then realized that I didn’t really know for sure. We kissed some in the beginning stages of his cold sore (likely when he was most contagious) because I wasn’t concerned. I haven’t had any symptoms. We then took a kissing break just to be safe. I’d love it if I’m immune, or don’t need to be concerned. The kissing break is not fun.
I was tested in the past at Westover Heights and was positive for HSV2 and negative for HSV1. I’ve never had a cold sore, or a boyfriend that gets cold sores to my knowledge.
If I have HSV2 can I get HSV1? If I do am I likely to develop any cold sores? This would be hard for me as I’m very self conscious.
Thanks for your help and expertise.
So I don’t know when you were tested at the Clinic but in the past several years, we have determined that the IgG test we used misses 30% of HSV 1, so you could be infected and the test didn’t pick it up.
However, if you are truly negative for HSV 1, there is almost zero chance you would ever acquire HSV 1 subsequently.
