      Good afternoon,
I had a new sexual partner whom I had unprotected sex with, which began on June 11th. I also had another encounter with someone else. In May I tested negative for HSV 1 & 2. In July (around the 13-15th), I did regular STD testing and also got blood tested. My results came back equivocal at 1.09. My doctor told me she didn’t see any signs of herpes when she checked me and that I shouldn’t worry as it could be HSV1. My next test was taken July 20th, & I got the results saying I was positive with a iGG of 1.69 for HSV2, .90 for HSV1. I got my labs done by quest diagnostics. They told me to wait for further testing before any further direction. I got the inhibition test results which I’m guessing was from the blood I had drawn on 7/20, as positive too, without any IGG value. Neither of the people I have been with have told me about any symptoms of herpes and nor do I have any symptoms. I do have hidradenitis suppuratvia also and sometimes get bad flare ups. So now I’m wondering if I should get a PCR swab or should I take a western blot test? I’m distraught and a mess right now.

I forgot to mention that my second encounter was June 29th. It was with my now ex boyfriend whom was the only person I was with since 2019. Also I’d like to mention that on my equivocal test results, they had stated in the notes that they repeated the test. Im unsure what the problem was that they felt the need to repeat it. The only symptom I can think of was me having a very painful time having sex a week before (July 7 with new partner) my equivocal result, and I’ve read that that by itself isn’t a herpes symptom. My gyn said it looked more like a yeast infection, I took fluconazole and my symptoms subsided. I’m over analyzing every single thing going on with my body right now & think everything it because of herpes and I hate it. I just need clarification on the next steps to take. My REFHSV2 results from 7/20 came today stating HSV-2 IgG Inhibition, IA positive, HSV-2 IgG, Type-Specific, NG. Does this mean anything?

We have had several people now who test positive for HSV 2 by IgG and also positive on the Quest inhibition assay who test negative by western blot, considered the gold standard. If I were you, I would get the western blot and let that be the final answer on your HSV 2 status. You can work with you own provider to get this or with me. Both work fine. But I don’t think you have a final answer quite yet.

Okay how soon would I be able to take the western blot? And what is the process to do it with you?

If you want me to be a provider ordering the test for you, we need to set up a telehealth appointment and you would be doing it as part of a study comparing IgG testing to western blot testing. Just follow the link on this website to “get a western blot” on the home page.
