I went to an infectious disease doctor’s office. I have bad anxiety and OCD. I had been salsa dancing with a guy and had small cuts on my fingers.
I then asked for a visual vaginal exam because I had used a bar of soap left in a hotel room when I was 12..am now 39…I thought I may have caught something.
After the visual gynelogical exam I realized the doctor’s office does not clean with medical grade cleaners and the paper was damp from the cleaner. They used Lysol disinfectant spray and only left it on for 30 secs at lost before wiping it down. Per back of the bottle, not enough time to kill HSV. Am I at risk for HSV from sitting on the table. My doctor says no and all my friends say the same…they think this is OCD but I’m still very worried. Thank you for your help.

You are at no risk of acquiring HSV from this situation.
I hope that you are working with a cognitive behavioral therapist on these OCD types of thoughts.Terri

Thank you Terri. I read online STIs may spread through sex toys. When I sat on the exam table, part of the unpaperd part may have touched my genital area. I am worried because if STIs can be spread through sex toys through touch and my gential area touched the improperly disinfected exam table is this any different? Am I am risk for catching HSV? Should I get any testing done? Thank you again.

No, I don’t believe that this situation presents a risk for you. In most offices that i know of, the table beneath the paper gets cleaned with antiviral and antibacterial material and then the paper placed over this.

Hi Terri. Yes this is true, but this doctor’s office did not use medical grade cleaners. They used Lysol spray and Lysol wipes which both do not kill HSV 1 and 2. They only kill HSV 1 and 2 if left on the surface for 10 mins which they did not do. I’m terrified I caught a STD because of their negligence. What do you suggest I do? Any testing? Thank you!

The medical grade cleaners kill all the diseases but the doctor’s office did not use this on the exam table. ☹️

Sex toys can spread STIs via surfaces that is why I am very worried about sitting on the improperly disinfected exam table at the doctor’s office. Please let me know what you think and if I should get any testing done. Please see my two posts above before responding…thank you!

As you can see I’m torn. My therapist thinks this is OCD. But I feel if still like to know the answer to my question. Do you mind reading the last 8 posts (they are short) and responding? Thank you!

Sex toys move from one person to another rapidly and go inside. This is a totally different situation than the one you describe. This does NOT put you at risk. This is definitely your OCD worrying.

Hi Terri…thank you.
Do you still feel the same way if I said the doctor’s office did not use medical grade cleaners to wipe down the exam table? They used Lysol wipes which does not kill HSV 1 or 2 unless left on the exam table for 10 minutes, which I know they did not do. It does not kill other diseases either. I sat on the exam table naked because I was having a gynelogical exam done there. I’m still slightly scared I caught a STD sitting on the exam table that was improperly disinfected. What are your thoughts/opinions on this? Do I need to get any testing done?
Thanks,

the action of just wiping down the table would remove herpes virus, even if this particular wipe doesn’t say it kills herpes. And earlier you said you sat on the paper, now you are saying you removed the paper and sat directly on the table? Even if you did that, I dont’ have any concerns about you getting an STI from a table that has been wiped down, regardless if it was medical grade cleaner.
