I have been married for 10 years and had my first pregnancy is 2017 and tested negative for HSV. 2019 2nd pregnancy tested equivocal and then negative when they tested me again 4 weeks later. Now flash forward to my 3rd pregnancy and I tested positive but a low positive (5). They are going to test me again at 24 weeks pregnant but the doc is giving me conflicting info. I have never had symptoms and neither has my husband. I tested negative in 2019, why would I test positive now with a low positive? The doc said they usually see people in the range of 200-300 on the HSV test that are truly positive but they keep saying I’m positive? Can something like this remain dormant for over 15 years with zero symptoms? Do I really have it? Would it tell me when I contracted it if I do have it? Once you test negative then wouldn’t it stay that way when I know my husband hasn’t cheated on me or anything? I requested my blood work. Why would they even test me without any symptoms ever being pregnant? I am so upset and do not know what to make of all of this. Please help me!

The numbers you give are unfamiliar to me. Are you in the US?
I don’t know what to make of a test that gives values in the 200-300 range or the 5 range that is unlikely to be positive. Are you sure about these numbers?Terri

Yes I am in the US.
2019- HSV-2 .94 equivocal Igg test
Tested again at 24 weeks pregnant and it was negative
2023- HSV-2 5.04 positive Igg testThe doctor did tell me they used 2 different labs for these so it is hard to compare.
2019 lab results were from PML
2023- lab results are from American
Esoteric Lab.Went back to the doctor today and they recommended I get tested again
(Same antibody test)for the antibodies to see if it was a true positive. Will have been 4 weeks out from the original test where I tested positive.)
Was told they are most true positives in the 30-100 range?Again, never had symptoms and neither has my husband. I know it can stay dormant for many years and not show but if I tested negative in 2019, then wouldn’t I test negative in 2023?
Please help me understand. I’m panicking.

Also,
Please read post before
This as well along with these questions.
1. Why would I test negative in 2019 but then test positive in 2023 when no new partners(been married 10
Years) and he has never been unfaithful. Would something like this stay dormant for over 13 years?
2. Should I have not done the supplemental IgG test today? Will it show me the same result since the first test was 5 weeks ago?
3. If the supplementary Igg blood test come back positive a 2nd time even with a low positive, should I request a western blot? -

That is extremely unlikely. You need a test from a lab like LabCorp or quest and see what you get.
I have no idea where you are getting those very high numbers for test results of 30-100. That isn’t how these results come for HSV 2.2. Should I have not done the supplemental IgG test today? Will it show me the same result since the first test was 5 weeks ago?
Supplemental test? Through which lab?3. If the supplementary Igg blood test come back positive a 2nd time even with a low positive, should I request a western blot?
I don’t know if you can get the western blot through your doctor but you can try. There is a test out there called the immunoblot – it’s NOT the western blot. That is only done at the University of Washington. That’s the test you need.Terri

My doctor suggested to do it again to see if it was a true positive or false positive. I am sure I will come back with the same result as it is the same test from the same lab. They use American Esocetric Lab.
Should I have not gotten a 2nd test?Should I go to Labcorp instead of my doctor for a test or go straight to the western blot?
So you think it is unlikely I have it since I tested negative in 2019 and no new partners? It makes no sense to me. Never have had symptoms and neither has my husband.
Does being pregnant do something to the test to make it look like you have HSV-2 when you don’t?

Update:
Got my supplemental results( which was the same IGG test from American Esocentric Lab) and my results were 5.01.
Doctor told me since I tested negative with a score of .05 in 2019 that means I contracted HSV-2 after that. I asked her how does that happen if my husband and I have both been faithful to one another during that time how could I have contracted it? She said my husband would have to be the carrier of it and it probably stayed dormant in his body for over a decade with no outbreak and he had an outbreak from 2019-now and we had sex and I got it that way.
That makes no sense right? We have had unprotected sex for over a decade and he never gave it to me but then all of a sudden I got it from him? He has never had an outbreak ever. Please help me understand this? Does that sound right? -

I continue to strongly believe that you need a herpes western blot for clarification. A middle step would be for your husband to get an IgG test also. use a big lab like Quest or LabCorp though. I am very skeptical about your situation with this positive from a small lab.
