I received results today, HSV2 1.16. I am freaking out. I have never had a positive result for this. No history of HSV1 or cold sores either. Never had a symptom. Is a 1.16 considered low or high? My doctor said that the results do not indicate that i “have” HSV but maybe was exposed at some point. He was upset that i even took the test. How true is this? Could this be a false positive?? What could cause a false positive?? How concerned should I be with the results?? Do I need to now tell people about this?? I am freaking out. I have never had any symptoms. Am I supposed to wait and see if I ever do now?? #scared

I don’t recall what your previous posts were about – did you post before? It’s easier for me if people post in the same thread. Though 1.16 is technically positive, there is a huge likelihood that your test is a false positive – probably 90% at that particular level. Don’t freak out – just do the steps that need to be done to clarify. So tell me what is going on here sex-partner wise and refer me back to a previous post if appropriate.

Im not sure what happened to the original post but the content was the same.
I have NEVER had any symptoms or concerns regarding this. I took the test as apart of my annual blood work. I have never had a positive for this before. 2 years ago i had a positive for hsv1 but a retest showed negative. Never had a cold sore or anything. What could cause a false positive?? And am i now to tell people about this?? My doctor said no, only if you are someone having outbreaks or repeated outbreaks. What is the likelihood that an outbreak would ever happen. I have been in a new relationship for the past 6 months and things are going good. Im so scared and don’t know how to approach this situation. Please help me!

You need to get a confirmatory western blot antibody test. We can arrange that for you through the clinic to be drawn at a lab near you. The western blot will tell you both about HSV 1 and HSV 2. The odds are great that you do NOT have herpes. Has your current partner been tested?

I don’t believe he has ever tested for it. I was thinking that i would not have the conversation with him until i am clear as to what is going on with me. Please help me with the following questions;
1- Is 1.16 considered low? My doctors office said this but wanted your opinion. I don’t know what a typical or strong positive is and I’m just curious
2-What could cause a false positive?
3-Are condoms the best means of protection? -

1.16 is VERY low – the cutoff for positive is 1.1 so you are BARELY over the cutoff.
We don’t really know what causes false positives
If you are infected, condoms are useful and so is daily antiviral therapy.
Your partner should be tested soon so you can make sense of this, OK?Terri
