Hello,
I am recently got diagnosed with GHSV1 at the end of November, and i have been an emotional mess ever since. I don’t think i will ever be okay with my diagnoses, but i have accepted that it is a part of me now. I know you have answered a lot of questions about this disease, but i still have a few questions.1) I had my first OB at the end of November. It was mild rash that cleared up in a week. I started taking antivirals because i didn’t want to experience another OB as it was emotionally difficult for me. I had another small bump down there that cleared up in a 3 days in January, and now i am currently experiencing a pretty bad OB. I thought taking antivirals is supposed to prevent OB? I know with GHSV1 after the initial OB, some experience 1-2 OB between 1-2 years and after 2 years most people don’t have recurrent OB. Do you think after this current OB, there is a chance that i will not experience another OB? The reason i started antiviral is so i don’t have OB so i am a bit concerned that the medication isn’t working for me. Should i go off antivirals to see the natural course of the disease?
2) In regard to antibodies to prevent contractions OHSV1, with me on antivirals i know i will slowly develop antibodies. how long do you think this will take? a year? 2 years?
3) I am currently seeing a someone and i am scared of passing it to him. i know with antivirals it is rare but not impossible, and ever more difficult to pass it from female to male. i would never have sex or have him perform oral sex on me during an OB! But if we were to have unprotected sex and he performed oral sex on me(I know HSV1 likes the mouth), what are the chances of me passing this on during an OB- will i definitely pass it? without an OB, but shedding?
5)Diabetes and HSV1. Any research on this? Cure anytime soon?
6) I notice i develop rashes behind my ears before an OB and during. Is this common with viral infection? is this a sign of an OB instead of a tingling sensation? -

Hello Terri,
I am still experiencing an OB and it has been a week. This OB is definitely worse than my initial one as there is lots of itching and burning during urination. Is normal for subsequent OB’s to be worse than the initial one and last longer?
Regarding the rashes behind my ears, they have cleared up, but again, still experiencing an OB. Could i give myself OHSV1 by touching my ears and then touching my mouth? I know i am developing antibodies slowly because i an on daily anti-virals so i am really worried about getting OHSV1.
I was also experiencing mild abdominal cramps and back pain at the start of my OB. Does this happen during an OB as i was not on my period or ovulating at that time.
Does eating healthy, working out and generally living a healthy lifestyle prevent OB’s? Some swear by this!
Thank you!

How much antiviral medicine are you taking and which one?
How were you diagnosed with HSV 1 genital infection? Was an antibody test done at the time, a swab, both?2) In regard to antibodies to prevent contractions OHSV1, with me on antivirals i know i will slowly develop antibodies. how long do you think this will take? a year? 2 years?
That’s difficult to say – it could be a long time.3) I am currently seeing a someone and i am scared of passing it to him. i know with antivirals it is rare but not impossible, and ever more difficult to pass it from female to male. i would never have sex or have him perform oral sex on me during an OB! We don’t have any data on transmission of genital HSV 1. We do know it is rare indeed, but we have no specifics at all. You should find out if your current partner is already infected with HSV 1 – about the population has this virus so very common.5)Diabetes and HSV1. Any research on this? Cure anytime soon?
I am not aware of any data in this question6) I notice i develop rashes behind my ears before an OB and during. Is this common with viral infection? is this a sign of an OB instead of a tingling sensation?
I’ve never heard of anything like this before. Have you had the rash swab tested for HSV?

That is more unusual, yes, for sure. Are there also sores present? Are you certain it is an outbreak?Regarding the rashes behind my ears, they have cleared up, but again, still experiencing an OB. That’s why I asked about having the ear rashes swab testedI was also experiencing mild abdominal cramps and back pain at the start of my OB. Does this happen during an OB as i was not on my period or ovulating at that time.
That would be unrelated to the HSV infectionDoes eating healthy, working out and generally living a healthy lifestyle prevent OB’s? Some swear by this!
It can certainly help to support your immune system, and that’s a factor in the likelihood of recurrences.Terri

Hello Terri,
Thanks for your reply.
I am taking Valacyclovir 500mg daily, and i was diagnosed with a swab. Do you recommended getting an antibody test done? Will there be a difference in results?
I am very paranoid and have anxiety about transmitting OHSV1 to myself so i have decided to go off the antivirals and treat OB if they come. If i went off the meds now how long will it take for me to start developing antibodies and when do you think i will have full immunity? I know if i hadn’t started the antivirals it would have taken 4 months.
Also regarding the tingling sensation people develop prior to an OHSV1 OB, is it usually all over the lips- top and bottom, or localized to a small area. I have been experiencing a very mild tingling sensation on and off for the past 3 days to a small area on my lips. could this be a sign that i have OHSV1? Could the antivirals i was taking prevent an OB. i am also worried i may have contracted it when i contracted GHSV1. It is frustrating that there is not test to know if i have both. But if i contracted both at the same time, should i have developed sores on my lips by now? i know some never develop an OB. I am just very worried as i do not want both and it’s frustrating not knowing. 🙁
He got tested and does not have the virus. despite giving him all the information about the disease and that if we take all the proper precautions, it is very rare to transmit, he is still reluctant to be intimate with me because of his anxiety. Is there any other information i can give to him or other way i can ease his mind about this?
Yes, i am sure i am having an OB as there are sores. It is almost cleared up now, but i will get a swab done if i ever develop another OB of this severity.
My rash has also cleared up now, but i will definitely get it swabbed i develop them again.

Hello Terri,
I am getting really worried i also contracted OHSV1 when i got GHSV1. The tingling sensation is still there but mild and it’s on the top and bottom of my lips. its on and off like i’ll feel it for an hour and then not for another 2 hours or so(still mild)Is this an indication?? What does the tingling sensation feel like? Mild, mod or intense? or does it depend on the person?. I’m not sure what it is supposed to feel like or how long my lips should tingle for before an OB. I also developed a very small bump on the top of my upper lips(it could be nothing, but i’m really worried its herpes).
I stopped taking the antiviral a few days ago, but i am thinking maybe i should go back on them since i might have OHSV1 and thats more contagious and i do not want to pass it on to my partner. But if it’s not OHSV1 and i continue taking the meds, i’m slowing my body’s process of developing antibodies. I’m really not sure what to do here. I really want to develop my antibodies if it’s not OHSV1. i have accepted that i have GHSV1 and could have the oral one as well, i just don’t want to pass it on, and i also want to develop antibodies quickly off the meds if i don’t have OHSV 1.
Thank you for your help and insight.

There is no need for an antibody test if you’ve been diagnosed by culture.
If you come off antivirals, you’ll develop antibody usually within 12 weeks at the outside.
It isn’t possible to know if you also acquired the HSV 1 orally without a swab test of the area you are concerned about. Generally, if a cold sore is going to develop, the tingling is in a specific location on the lip, correct.
If you want to reduce the risk of transmission the most, stay on antiviral medication.
If can’t accept this, then you should think about moving on. If he can’t handle this very minor medical issue, I hate to think about how he would handle something serious. And if he moves on to someone who actually does have oral HSV 1, they are far more infectious to him than you are with just genital HSV 1. infection.Terri
