Hi,
I’m asking this question because I used to get outbreaks like sores on my lips that looked like cold sores every 2 months or so last year the doctor told me it was herpes. I went to Mexico and it happened there too so a doctor gave me some pills for it and it stopped. Since then I haven’t had any outbreaks. I decided to go do a igg test to see the levels I had. The lab was any test lab now. When I got the results back they were negative the levels were 0.22 and 0.70 for hsv 1 and hs2 I decided to test again with them a month later and it still came out late negative with the similar levels around that range. I read online that the igg test are not accurate I don’t know what to do. What if it was something else like a fungal or something else I don’t know because they said it looked like herpes. I even got medicine for it here. It’s weird that I haven’t got any outbreaks since that medicine that doctor gave me. Hopefully you can help me

One thing I do notice is that I always have a burning or irritated lip sensation I don’t know if that’s because of herpes or just dry lips or another condition . I put on aquaphor but it doesn’t really help. Does the irritated lips make me contiguous? that’s if I have herpes or not.

The Igg test misses 30% of HSV 1 infections, compared to the gold standard western blot. Cold sores are almost always caused by HSV 1. If you want to know for certain if you have HSV 1 you can do the herpes western blot or you could have one of the cold sores swab tested for HSV 1, but if you are on daily medication for HSV, you may not have any recurrences.

Hello,
No I’m not on daily medication. The medicine I took was a one week treatment. Why do you think I scored so low on the herpes test? Are the lips burning sensation a symptom of herpes or is it something else? Does that make me contiguous? I would do the blot test but I don’t have the funds for it currently. Hopefully you can help me thank you

The IgG test for HSV 1 misses 30% of HSV 1 infections, compared to the western blot, as I mentioned in an earlier post. We cannot know at this point if the lip burning is related to an oral HSV 1 infection or something else because we don’t know if you actually have HSV 1 orally. The sores that you’ve had in the past and were diagnosed as cold sores likely were – I don’t know why you’ve stopped having outbreaks but if you get another one, I would encourage you to have it swab tested right away to sort out the cause.
