On 5th of September I had unprotected sex. By the 10th of September I started having symptoms, yellow milky discharge, burning during and after urination, aching genitals and a red inflamed urethra with red patches.
I went to the STI clinic who looked at my urethra and swabbed it. They looked under the microscope and found pus cells. So they made me take a urine sample and treatment for gonorrhoea and chlamydia. They said it’s unlikely to be herpes.
A few weeks later my symptoms improved and my urine came back negative for gonorrhoea and chlamydia but I was still having burning after urination. So I went back to the clinic at the start of October. They also said it wasn’t herpes and tested for M.Genitaliam. This also came back negative.
Eventually after 5-6 weeks since unprotected sex my symptoms disappeared. I didn’t have symptoms for around 2-3 weeks and now they are back. I’m having pain only during urination and the discharge is back and can be found in my underwear.
Could this be herpes in your experience or do I need to pay to see a urologist to investigate other causes?
Update: I was given antibiotics and the discharge and symptoms improved after a day or two. But Its still a little uncomfortable when I pee. Not very painful though. It’s been 2 weeks since my symptoms have come back. What could this be?
It is likely something we call NGU – non-gonococcal urethritis. We are not aware of all of the causes but if the antibiotics are helping that is key. Antibiotics would not help a herpes infection at all and the symptoms aren’t all that consistent with herpes either.
I would, however, advise you to get an IgG test for HSV 1 and 2 when 12 weeks have passed since the encounter.
