greetings,
my exposure – condom protected vaginal for couple minutes her on top and unprotected oral given by me.
when – mid-March of this year.
symptoms – 2 weeks after genital discomfort for 2 weeks, 2 months it returned lasted 2 weeks, this time with fever, chills, diarrhea, etc. for a week, still to this day have mild reoccurring ache in prostate/testicles… usually it is accompanied with nausea/malaise, 2.5 months after sore throat and thrush, thrush lasted 3 weeks sore throat a month and a half, 3 mos after exposure I got redness on my penis shaft right below the rim of the head about an inch or so down around the whole circumference of the shaft, a little painful but mostly felt irritated, no blisters or sores that I could tell, that has persisted to this day in varying degrees but has never completely gone away, a week ago I got tingling all over my genital area which lasted off and on about 3 or 4 days, a week ago also I got a sore jaw where the top and bottom jaw meet which still persists, the last month or so I’ve had a spot on my finger at the first bend which is a red raised area and a small round circle in the middle of it, doesn’t hurt and the circle isn’t raised.
never really had any blisters that I noticed except for once about 3 mos after exposure I had an erection and I noticed about 6 or 7 small bumps at the base of my penis… didn’t hurt at all, when I lost my erection the bumps became so small I couldn’t really see them very well, the next day I tried to get a picture of them but when I became erect they were completely gone, I don’t have any idea how long there were there before I noticed them and they haven’t returned.
doc visits – 4 times to my gp which based on symptoms said he wasn’t sure and with no sores nothing to swab so he ordered testing.
tests – full std panel at 10 wks all negative including herpes and at 17 wks had another herpes igg and both hsv1 and hsv2 came back negative.
but symptoms still persist so I’m puzzled
thank you -

I can tell you are worried about these unusual symptoms and you are trying very hard to sort all of this out.
First, one episode of condom protected intercourse is really low risk – the once and the condom make it so.
Second, the oral sex you gave is not a risk at all as most of your symptoms are all genital.
Third, the symptoms that you do have do not sound like herpes to me. You’ve got little symptoms all over the place and that just isn’t how herpes works.
But the best thing is you are negative for HSV 1 and 2 at 17 weeks, which is plenty of time for you to become positive if you were going to become positive.
I don’t know what is going on with you but you can take herpes off your list.Terri

thank you very much for the reply
I have had some symptoms orally (sore throat/ thrush) and this jaw joint pain that persists. thoughts?
what are your thoughts on the bumps that changed size and then just disappeared? does this happen with herpes?
is prostate/ testicle pain ever a part of herpes infection?
also wondered if an ob would be on both sides of shaft or only one side?
any ideas on other symptoms at all? tingling, etc.
I wish I could send you a picture of this finger thing but not sure if you do that.
just so many unexplained symptoms that seem could be herpes related… idk
also wondered if it was hsv1 maybe the test missed it as you say it misses 25% of infections.
also wondered if it was hsv2 could I be one of those that take 6 months to have detectable antibodies. possible?
I thank you for your reassurance but finding it difficult to move on… seems every time I turn around a new symptom shows up and really haven’t felt well for the last 4 mos.
I keep reading about how herpes only shows up for a certain time period and then is completely gone until next ob… idkany other conflicts with my symptoms and a true herpes infection would be welcomed and appreciated…
my gp did other tests also… urine, psa, diabetes, thyroid, etc. everything was normal…
I might mention also that the girl I was with I had heard later through a friend had herpes… not sure if 1 or 2… did not notice anything on her but honestly the lights were out and didn’t see real well…
sorry to hit you with so many questions…
thank you again for your help… -

Sore throat that is caused by thrush is not a sign of an STD nor is jaw pain that persists. Not at all. If you were the giver of oral sex to her, then the sore throat should be evaluated to rule out gonorrhea or chlamydiawhat are your thoughts on the bumps that changed size and then just disappeared? does this happen with herpes?
Not exactly. Herpes lesions to start as a blister or you might see it first as an ulcer, then it often scabs or fills in and goes awayis prostate/ testicle pain ever a part of herpes infection?

I really don’t though it could be something related to disc compression in your backI wish I could send you a picture of this finger thing but not sure if you do that.

That’s possible, I suppose, though the risk is low. If you want the best test for HSV 1 antibody it is the herpes western blot and our clinic can arrange for that be drawn at a lab near your home if you like.also wondered if it was hsv2 could I be one of those that take 6 months to have detectable antibodies. possible?
I never say never but really unlikely. If you did the western blot, it picks up not only way more HSV 1 but also 2% more cases of HSV 2 than the screening test.I thank you for your reassurance but finding it difficult to move on… seems every time I turn around a new symptom shows up and really haven’t felt well for the last 4 mos.

I would rely more on the testing results than I would on gossip about this person

thank you very much for the reply…
I guess I read on a medical site that oral herpes can sometimes settle in the tmj area of the jaw and cause pain… idk?
I was tested for oral gonorrhea and chlamydia by my gp results were negative… had it done when I had the full panel done at 10 weeks…
all the symptoms still make me wonder…
I only spoke to the girl once after that and she insisted she didn’t have anything but offered no test results…you mentioned that the risk is low for it to be hsv1… can you expound on that some?
also in your experience how many folks have you ever seen be negative for hsv2 at 16 weeks and test positive later?
I am considering the wb just to get closure maybe but feel frustrated that I’m not able to trust my results… I guess if I didn’t have symptoms that linger I might be able to move on…
most of them are disappearing like the jaw and finger issues… the only one that kind of remains is the penis irritation… gp who said he wasn’t sure if it was herpes thought it might just be irritated skin but it has persisted 3or 4 mos now… any thoughts?thank you again for your help and any additional reassurance would be appreciated…

I doubt that herpes would cause jaw pain, really.
Good that you tested negative for gonorrhea and chlamydia
If you gave her oral, HSV 1 is a low risk because if she had HSV 1 genitally, it is shed infrequently from the genital area and so it would be unlikely for you to get it orally in that way.
I have rarely seen people test negative at 16 weeks and then test positive later. I have had a few people who tested negative by the screening test at 16 weeks and then test positive by western blot – that makes sense because the screening test misses 2% of HSV 2 infections vs. western blot and the screening HSV 1 test misses about 1 out of 4 compared to western blot.
So the odds that you would test positive for HSV 2 at 16 weeks by western blot and not by screening test are only two out of 100. That’s pretty damn good, don’t you think?Terri
