On Jan 29, I had intercourse with a female. Partially protected/partially unprotected. I was very intoxicated. She said she was clean. Feb 3rd-gonn/chlamdia test negative. I contstanlty had to pee. I constantly Checked myself for signs of infections or STDs. I had pain in my testicles that made them feel heavy. I just felt horrible. Feb 28th-4 weeks PE the female stopped talking to me and I became terrified of the thought of having an std. I did a 8 test panel through std test express at labcorp. All came back negative. The day after i was tested i started getting an itch on my foreskin. Maybe it was the underwear. I don’t know. 2 days later I started getting a pain in the hip/groin area. I thought it was lymph nodes. Went to the Dr and he said it was a hip flexor. I am very active. He prescribed naproxen for inflammation and i took probablu 10 of the 20 pills. I went on a google binge and havent stopped since. Which probably isnt good. I then did another 10 test panel through std check at 6 weeks and 8 weeks at quest. All negative. Went to doctor at 6 weeks and he said pain in groin/hip is def not due to STD. About 7 weeks I got a thrombosed hemorrhoid, maybe because of the continuous use of trying to go to the bathroom. I was/still am a nervous wreck. Went to doctor at 9 weeks. He said no STD and sent me to specialist for hemorrhoid. Specialist at 12 weeks said it was definitely a thrombosed hemorrhoid. It is since gone. Also at 12 weeks I did a std test through std test express for HSV and HIV. These were done through quest diagnostics. HSV herpesselect IGG and HIV 4th gen. For the first time I got an IGG reading. HSV1 was .41 and HSV2 was .21. These were obviously negative. HIV was nonreactive. Since the first test when I really started freaking I had a constant itch in random places on my penis. Especially on the right side where the shaft of my penis meets my scrotum. I did a little man scapping the other day and the itch has subsided but not fully gone away. Will that much anxiety about little johnny really cause that much tenderness. There are also wrinkles on my penis head that i dont think were there before. Could this be from not getting an erection bc im depressed? When i do have an erection they go away. My penis just doesn’t look/seem to be like it was before this horrible night. I must also admit that I have since started drinking beer almost every night. The guilt of this is killing me. The pain in my hip/groin is still there and it seems to be muscle related BC of different stretches I have been trying. Could the naproxen hide the primary infection? Should I test again? What should I do? Sorry for all the rambling but I need help some kind of bad. Thank you.

We like the final and definitive antibody test to be done a 16 weeks post exposure. If your herpes test is negative at 16 weeks, then I believe you can feel reassure that you did not acquire HSV 2. The naproxen would do nothing to blunt antibody from being developed whatsoever. Your hip pains do sound muscular, and I’ll bet with all this tension in your body, you could be holding your body in certain ways that stress muscles that are not stressed when you are relaxed and comfortable in your previous state of mind.

All you can do is to test with accurate tests and timing and observe for lesions while you wait for the timing to be best.
Are you normally this stressed out when you have a sexual contact? Is this person different in some way for you?

Unfortunately as embarrassing as it all is. I am married with a child. I should be taken out back behind the wood shed and beat one good time, or many times. I deserve a lot of bad things due to my mistake, intoxicated or not. Before my wife of 3 years I probably had a total of 25 partners. Many without protection. And I have been tested previously because of penile pain and testicular pain. Of course thinking I had something. In those past experiences everything came back negative. I’m guessing, hoping these are just the same depressive sensations I kind of have previously felt. I think about what I did day and night. There’s probably a total minute of my day I don’t think about what I did. Which sucks. But I deserve the hand I was dealt. I’ve inspected and continuously inspected my groin area with no sores or lesions observed. One day it will be a vein protruding here and another protruding there. And i think thats herpes. I mean does herpes cause me to itch for 10 weeks? What’s the chances of me becoming positive after 16 weeks compared to 12? The people at test express say I should be very confident in my results at 12 weeks. With all these other ailments (pain in hip and hemorrhoids) and stess shouldn’t I have had a sore or lesion by now? Or at least tested positive. I’m sure you see this all the time. A head case std hypochondriac that can’t take negative for an answer. That’s me. Through and through. Thanks for your time. Hope to hear from you soon.

Join the ranks of the fallible people in the world. I think the chances of becoming positive at 16 weeks when you were not at 12 weeks is small, maybe a 5-10 % chance? I’m not sure about that number. Herpes would not cause you to itch for 10 weeks, no, certainly not.

      Hi Terri,

So if I do a test through Labcorp, should I do a HSV2 antibody test igg(#163147) or should I spend the extra money and do a HSV immunoblot test igg(#138487). Which test is most reliable? Or are they the same test. Immunoblot “sounds” much more reliable then the generic term antibody test. Hehe. I’m really only worried about HSV2. Or should I continue using the Quest Diagnostics herpeselect test I previously had. I am clueless as to what I should do, try, or trust the most. A little guidance on the best option at this point would be awesome. Thanks.

The immunoblot is a far inferior test, in my opinion, because it does not give you a range like the IgG antibody test does. LabCorp uses a test called Captia and it’s fine. All the screening tests miss some HSV 1 infections but miss far fewer HSV 2 infections.

But I see no reason why you would switch from the herpeselect test with Quest.

The best test, of course, is the western blot which the clinic can order for you to be drawn at a Quest lab near you and sent to the University of WAshington. If you want the most reassurance that is the test to do.

Soooo HSV1 .38 now and HSV2 stayed the same at .21 according to lab results I just received from Quest on my 16 week mark. I’m still experiencing pain in my inside thigh/hip area that the doctor chalcked up to a possible hip flexor. Genitals still itch in random places and I have a occasional heavy/pain feeling in my right testicle. Same side as the hip/thigh issue. I still can’t get over the negative tests and believe I am HSV2 positive. Should I test again? Try to get the WB? Or just finally let this all pass and hope the tests were accurate. I obviously am experiencing a lot of anxiety/depression and regret from this single maybe/possible exposure. The female says she is negative but I obviously have my doubts and my mind is very twisted at this point. What’s ur recommendation from a professional standpoint? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you are still worried, then I think a western blot is appropriate to reassure you completely. When people are experiencing anxiety or fear about herpes. sometimes the western blot goes a long way to resolve those concerns. Your call, of course. If you can let it go without it, then skip it.

      Terri,

Thanks for your help. I am so undecided about taking the WB. For reassurance I probably should but I don’t know. Can you tell me or put a figure on you recalling the number of people who tested negative herpeselect at 12 and 16 weeks with a value both time at .21 but still tested positive WB? How about a false positive WB. Does that just not happen?

If I decide to take the WB can I go through your office to order it and what kind of price is it going to be? I know the teat will be 2 or 300. But what will your office charge? Thanks for your help. I’m hoping to put this all behind me in a couple weeks or maybe finally face the fear of being infected. 50-50 shot at this point!!

False positives do not happen with the western blot. I don’t recall seeing hardly any negative ELISA tests and positive western blot for HSV 2, though I think there have been a few in the years at the clinic.

The cost of getting it through our clinic is $250, and that includes the consultation that allows you to become our patient. That is true in all but five states in the union.

I’m unclear why you think you have a 50-50 chance of having HSV 2. I would say the odds are more like 97-3 that you do not.

So with no actual genital lessons, a high amount of stress (which could or could not cause more outbreaks, depending on who you ask) and really only a lot of genital anxiety. To include, itching in random places, testicular pain, random pain in my front hip/thigh area and just an overall feeling of something not being right. You would say the odds are well in my favor at this point for having not acquired HSV2? You say 97-3 are my chances. Are those 3 typically because of wrong infections dates or use of antivirals? Which I haven’t taken. I guess once this WB comes back maybe I will put this all past me. But my biggest fear now is a false positive. Which you say doesn’t happen. I’m just terrified I’m in that 3 that didn’t test positive via herpeselect at 16 weeks and my WB is going to come back positive for HSV2. These next 1-3 weeks after the draw are going to be roughhhh! Thanks for your help.

The 3% is the amount of people that the HSV 2 ELISA misses on screening. It’s been 16 weeks since the encounter, yes?

Have you ordered the western blot through the clinic yet?
