      Hi Terri,

Hope all is well. I had a few questions about the differences between HSV1 and skin contact unrelated to the mouth. My understanding is the “mat herpes” is HSV1 that can show up in other areas of the skin other than the oral/genital area. Does this mean that someone with HSV1 can develop mat herpes and have sore elsewhere?

Is it possible to catch HSV1 through holding someone’s hand as it is more than likely confused as a rash or something else? Does this mean someone can shed from those areas even when there is not a sore if they have had a sore say on their elbow?

What if someone touches their mouth with a sore and then later holds my hand?

      Thank you.

Long story short – I am feeling tingles on the inside of my palm less than 24 hours later. Should I be considered about touching myself in other places?

It isn’t possible to transmit herpes through holding hands.
Herpes Gladitorium (mat herpes), comes from someone wrestling getting abrasions on the skin from the mat and someone with whom they are wrestling, would get virus (usually from a cold sore) on the mat. This is quite uncommon but definitely happens from time to time. When holding hands, there is no event that would cause abrasions on the skin like in wrestling.

Thank you! What would the possibility be if whitlow was present?

If whitlow was present, the other person would 1) need to be uninfected 2) have a break in the skin exactly where the whitlow was located. I think the odds of both being true are zero
