Hi Terri – I have HSV 1 both oral and genital. I have had HSV 1 oral for probably 20 years. During the first year I had breakouts but it has been about 20 years since I had a breakout on my face. I know from you book that oral shedding can occur 6-33 percent of days. Because I have not had a breakout in 20 years what is the percentage that I can give this to someone who I had a long kissing make out session. I really don’t want to pass this along to someone else. Thanks
We unfortunately have no statistics about HSV 1 transmission either mouth to mouth, mouth to genitals or genitals to mouth. I wish I had something I could tell you but I don’t. However, it is true that people shed less over time and recur less as well, which you already know from your own experience. Depending upon your age, there is a good chance that someone you are kissing also has HSV 1 infection already in which case your infection would not be a problem.
Please feel free to ask follow up questions as they come to you.
Terri
